First-generation graduates in OECD countries
This paper examines earnings differences between first-generation and continuing-generation college graduates across 24 OECD countries using data from the OECD Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC). In most countries analyzed, first-generation graduates earn significantly less than their peers from college-educated families, with an average gap across all countries of approximately 7.5%. We investigate potential mechanisms behind this result and find th…
Cognitive, Behavioral, and Learning Profiles of Children with Above-Average Cognitive Functioning: Insights from an Italian Clinical Sample
These findings confirm the heterogeneity of gifted profiles and underscore the need for personalized educational and psychological interventions to support both strengths and vulnerabilities in gifted children. Caution is warranted when interpreting these associations, given their modest effect sizes and the exploratory nature of the study
Network Formation and Peer Effects: Connecting Two Strands of Literature
Wage Compression within the Firm: Evidence from an Indexation Scheme
We revisit the role of labour market institutions by showing how they affect the sharing of firm-specific rents between employers and employees. We look at an Italian wage indexation mechanism (‘Scala Mobile’) that compressed the distribution of wages, imposing real wage increases at the bottom of the distribution. After developing a simplified version of a search model with intra-firm bargaining and on-the-job search, we document that skilled wo…
Correlating Social Mobility and Economic Outcomes
We apply a novel measure of intergenerational mobility (IM) developed by Guell, Rodriguez Mora, and Telmer (2014) to a rich combination of Italian data allowing us to produce comparable measures of IM of income for 103 Italian provinces. We then exploit the large heterogeneity across Italian provinces in terms of economic and social outcomes to explore how IM correlates with a variety of outcomes. We find that (i) higher IM is positively associat…
Immigration, Housing Discrimination and Employment
We use a new data set on Italy and a novel identification strategy to analyse the relationship between migrants' employment status and the percentage of non‐Italians living nearby. Our data contain information at the very local level and are representative of both legal and illegal migrants. Identification exploits the physical characteristics of local buildings as a source of exogenous variation in the incidence of migrants. We find that migrant…
Understanding Social Interactions: Evidence from the Classroom
Little is known about the economic mechanisms leading to the high level of clustering in behaviour commonly observed in the data. We present a model where agents can interact according to three distinct mechanisms and we derive testable implications which allow us to distinguish between the proposed mechanisms. In our application we study students' performance and we find that a mutual insurance mechanism is consistent with the data. Such a resul…

Do Friends and Relatives Really Help in Getting a Good Job
The available empirical evidence on the wage effect of finding jobs through informal contacts is mixed. This author theorizes that, depending upon the efficiency of formal search methods, the use of personal contacts can lead either to a wage premium or to a wage penalty. Using data from the European Community Household Panel (ECHP), the author finds new evidence to suggest that across many of the countries in the European Union, premiums and pen…
