African scholarly research is relatively invisible globally because even though research production on the continent is growing in absolute terms, it is falling in comparative terms. In addition, traditional metrics of visibility, such as the Impact Factor, fail to make legible all African scholarly production. Many African universities also do not take a strategic approach to scholarly communication to broaden the reach of their scholars'work. T…

  • Human rights in European foreign policy

    Thomas King•ARTICLE•European Journal of International…•1999•Cited by: 12

The foreign policy principles proclaimed by the Member States of the European Community in European Political Cooperation were founded upon the ideas which underpinned European integration: the abandonment of Westphalian norms and respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law. From the Copenhagen Declaration in 1970 to the Treaty on European Union in 1992, the Member States developed certain means to promote these values, such as the su…

  • Folk Management among Belizean Lobster Fishermen

    Thomas King•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1997

Fishermen from Caye Caulker, Belize use a local management system based on traditional areas, or territories, which limits access to the fishing areas around the caye. Data from Northern Fishermen Cooperative Society annual reports suggest that fishermen members of the cooperative have produced lobster tails at a stable rate for over thirty years. Other data from observations and interviews suggest that this seemingly effective local management s…

Thomas King, Brian Swann et al.•ARTICLE•The American Indian Quarterly•1990

A rich diversity of attitude, experience, and literary style can be seen in I Tell You Now. For these Native American writers, being caught between two cultures has sharpened the struggle for self-identity and a sense of self-worth. They describe their bittersweet memories of childhood and family life, their fight against prejudice and poverty, their triumph over personal problems, their role models and schooling, their reverence for the land and…
