Legitimating LGBTQ+ Scholarship in Political Science and Making It Flourish
This article introduces the LGBTQ+ Special edition of PS. It traces major developments of queer scholarship in political science beginning with Kenneth Sherrill’s 1973 paper, “Leaders in the Gay Activist Movement: The Problem of Finding Followers,” which was the first paper presented at an APSA annual meeting on a queer topic. As part of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Professor Sherrill’s first paper, this introduction describes t…

Fagchild Tools: Softening the Body Politic and Sexualizing Paul Ryan in a Pussy-Grabbing Era
This article cautions against the strong impulse in the #MeToo movement to desexualize politics. Informed by queer theory, the article argues that the public desexualization imperative, represented by indignation toward President Donald Trump's pussy-grabbing antics and the concomitant, albeit justified, movement to expose decades of his sexual harassment of women, casts a shadow across queer citizens that chills sexual expression in democratic d…
Queer sensibilities: Notes on method
This note characterizes queer methods developed in the humanities in ways that may be useful in social science and law. Since it is antithetical to queer theory’s resistance to fixity to concretize queer methods into a metatheory, this note characterizes these methods as queer sensibilities. Queer sensibilities are useful for analyzing queer bodies in public spaces – physical spaces and democratic spaces – especially in research programs concerne…
Constructing Queer Theory in Political Science and Public Law: Sexual Citizenship, Outspeech, and Queer Narrative
Queer theory is nearly absent from political science, including public law. This article advances constructivism as a paradigm shift in the context of sexual citizenship. The project, informed by queer theory, argues that political and legal systems (and related academic disciplines) regulating sexual citizenship should consider the political, legal, and cultural technologies that construct mutable sexualities, rather than viewing sexualities as …
The Marriage Debate and Minority Stress
Healthy adult development commonly includes a desire and intent to form intimate, long-term relationships. For individuals attracted to members of the other sex, these relationships may be formed, socially affirmed, and, by mutual choice, legally recognized by government agencies in the U.S. For individuals attracted to members of the same sex, these relationships may be formed, but social affirmation and legal recognition are only sporadically a…
