  • East to West to South to North—and Back: Driving Landscapes as a Thuringian Long-Distance Trucker

    Manuel Moser•ARTICLE•Transfers•2022

In this article, I map out landscaping practices by Thuringian long-distance truck drivers. Drawing on extended fieldwork, I show that contemporary truck drivers who drive the German and European highways with their political (and often racist) ideas in tow, structure their landscapes according to the four cardinal points. While getting disillusioned by experiences of an unwelcoming West that loses its utopic shine it had during the times of the …

  • Overview of the MosaiC expedition: Atmosphere

Open Access•Matthew D Shupe, Markus Rex et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

With the Arctic rapidly changing, the needs to observe, understand, and model the changes are essential. To support these needs, an annual cycle of observations of atmospheric properties, processes, and interactions were made while drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team desig…

  • Andino-Catholic Rituals in Automobile Bolivia: Bendiciones, Ch'allas and K'oas Performed by Drivers from Chuquisaca

    Open Access•Manuel Moser•ARTICLE•International Journal of Latin…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 20

In the article, I explore different motorcar blessing rituals undertaken by drivers from the Bolivian region of Chuquisaca, while centering primary my description on the side of the doing of the rituals and only linking them on a second stage to individual meaning and theological reflections. In that way, I show that the interviewed drivers differentiate the performed rituals first of all by their components (and not by their addressees) and cons…

Based on empirical research in 2017 and contributing to a break with a perspective of losses that is widespread in the work on Latin America by anthropologists of religion, this article doesn’t focus on “authenticity”, but analyzes how the population in today's Bolivia perceives and interprets a modern achievement. The article builds on data from participatory observations on motor vehicle blessing rituals in Bolivia and on narrative and semi-stru…
