  • Global Epistemology

Mohammed Bamyeh, Mohammed A Bamyeh et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Global Studies•2018

This chapter explores some of the building blocks of an epistemology that would be especially appropriate for global studies. A global epistemology requires a multidimensional approach because global complexity cannot be captured by any single discipline of knowledge or viewpoint. Six building blocks of such a global epistemology are proposed, each of which reverses common current approaches to global studies: highlighting meso- over macro-level …

An exploration of the most common theories and methods used in the ongoing Arab uprisings suggests that their roots lie in ordinary and familiar civic ethics, rather than in any conscious ideological project preceding the revolutions. This article explores the hypothesis that the revolutions have been facilitated most by long-standing traditions of self-organization that are usually ignored in scholarship of social movements as well as by organiz…

    Open Access•Mohammed A Bamyeh•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Revisiting Fanon's classic theory of violence and relying on some of his case studies, this article detects the propensity to see the world in abstract formats as the source of the most malignant forms of revolutionary violence. Based on this, the article explores how abstraction may still be a healthy way of thinking, especially in a globalized and postcolonial world. Two mechanisms for handling abstraction in humane ways are proposed, both of w…

  • Hermeneutics against Instrumental Reason: National and post-national Islam in the 20th century

    Mohammed Bamyeh, Mohammed A Bamyeh•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2008•Cited by: 3

Islamic identity and secular anti-colonial nationalism implied initially similar approaches to modernity in the Middle East. Islamic currents of the time reinterpreted Islam in an ‘instrumental’ fashion as an accompaniment to developmental nationalisms, elaborating their cultural aspects. However, new Islamic currents of recent decades reject secularism in favour not of instrumental Islam but of a hermeneutic one. Unlike instrumental Islam, in wh…

  • Fluid solidarities: Affiliations beyond the nation

    Mohammed A Bamyeh•CHAPTER•Nationalism and global solidarities•2006

The concept of ‘solidarity’ is one of the oldest and paradoxically least developed concepts in the history of sociology. The first definite use of ‘solidarity’ as a sociological concept can be traced back to Ibn Khaldun in fourteenth-century North Africa. Older uses of analogous concepts in high-medieval European political theory could be encountered in the thought of Thomas Aquinas, whose work was itself heavily based on Aristotle’s Politics, pr…

  • Chaos and the Conduits of Understanding

    Mohammed A Bamyeh•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2001•References: 7

In this paper, I examine how processes of chaos come to be apprehended by mainstream paradigms in social theory but not to show how the chaos perspective explains things differently or better than any other perspective. In most creation mythologies, existence is preceded by a monumental void, a void that nonetheless possesses some prophesying qualities. The complete lack of anything whatever is captured most sweepingly not only as a simple condit…
