Kai Zen
Beginning with the group's involvement with Wu Ming's Ti chiamerò Russell: Romanzo totale 2002, this article examines the writing collective Kai Zen's open- and closed-participation writing projects, focusing on the similarities and differences between the two collectives’ approaches. The article argues that Kai Zen's greater adherence to popular literary genres, such as science fiction, the western and the romanzo rosa, gives priority to the out…
Women's Prison
A thoroughly researched pioneering work based on personal interviews with inmates and prison personnel and on data compiled from questionnaires and inmate record files, Women's Prison reveals that homosexual liaisons are the primary foundation of the social structure of female inmates; shows that homosexual behavior can be a superficial kind of adjustment to particular situational privations; amplifies and broadens the application of earlier find…
Gender, Age, and Crime/Deviance
Focusing on gender and age variations and using various measures of self-control and of crime/deviance, the authors' provide additional evidence concerning the strongest implications of self-control theory—that self-control interprets the main demo-graphic facts about crime/deviance and is of approximately equal import for all sub-categories of individuals. On one hand, the results are strongly supportive of the theory, showing that some measures…
Alcatraz and Marion
The controversy over the behavioral and mental health consequences of confinement in high-security prisons has its origins in penal policies dating to the early 19th century. The rationale leading to the establishment of the first super-maximum custody prison at Alcatraz Island, California and the conversion in 1983 of the federal penitentiary at Marion, Illinois to a ‘supermax’ regime is briefly described. The subsequent application of the ‘Mari…

Arnold van Gennep's classic in comparative ethnography, Les Rites de passage, was first published in 1909.1 It collects accounts, more often anecdotal than scientific, of customs and societal patterns throughout the world in which the experience of change was supported, mediated, protected, magically assisted, its meaning constructed and validated, by ceremony and ritual. Van Gennep began by looking at territorial division, movements across bound…
A Note on Perceptual Deterrence, Religiously Based Moral Condemnation, and Social Control
Empirical investigations of social control mechanisms are often limited to single sources of control, such as the efficacy of legal punishments. Because research has produced only moderate support for the hypothesis that perceived risk of legal punishments reduces the likelihood of nonconformity, some have searched sources of control that condition this relationship. such as the degree of moral condemnation individuals hold toward a criminal/deli…
Deterrence or labeling
A structural model incorporating the effects on subsequent deviance of reactions to previous deviance suggested by both the labeling and specific deterrence arguments, along with other logical effects necessary for correct specification, is formulated and estimated using data concerning peer reactions to classroom cheating. The results are consistent with the traditional labeling argument and contrary to the model of specific deterrence. However,…

Influenceability of Sex Differences under Conditions of Risk Taking
The present study was designed to determine if risking monetary loss for conforming behavior may be a condition in which sex differences either exist or fail to occur. It was hypothesized that with increasing risk of punishment sex differences in conformity would disappear. The results did not support the hypothesis. The interaction between subject sex, punishment risk, and group pressure was nonsignificant. More specifically, the interaction bet…

Modeling the Deterrent Effects of Punishment
Nonexperimental (homicide) and experimental data are used to study the effects of the certainty and severity of punishment. Many deterrence researchers, working without systematic theory of how punishments should operate to influence behavior, have opted for a simple additive model of certainty and severity. However, a satisfaction balance model-a social psychological theory representing a modification of the matching equation and positing intera…

Family Violence, Television Viewing Habits, and Other Adolescent Experiences Related to Violent Criminal Behavior
This study employs multivariate analyses with retrospective self‐report data to assess the relative importance of certain childhood and adolescent experiences to the commission of violent crimes as an adult. Specifically, the relationship is examined between violent criminal behavior and exposure to family violence, exposure to television violence, school performance, other adolescent activities, and differential reinforcement for previous illega…
Television and Violent Criminal Behavior
This study builds on the research concerning television viewing and aggression by extending the external validity, or generalizability, of the dependent variable. We assess the relationship between self-reported television viewing at 8, 10, and 12 years of age and the subsequent commission of a violent criminal act. This study is based on interview data from 48 males incarcerated for violent crimes and 45 nonincarcerated, nonviolent males matched…
Cross-Sex Context as a Factor in Persuasibility Sex Differences
This study explores the hypothesis that previous reports of greater female persuasibility may have been confounded by the cross-sex context of the communication situation. Utilizing live male andfemale communicators within afully randomized repeated-measures design, the data indicate moderate support for the hypothesis. Alternative interpretations of the data are explored with particular attention to the theory that status inequalities in the lar…

The Ethnic Ghetto in the United States
The original synthetic concept of the American ghetto was based upon the assumed casual relationships between an adverse environment, residential segregation and pathological social conditions. In response to re-evaluations of the process of assimilation, the validity of these relationships has been questioned but the original synthesis remains influential. It is argued here that without the reinforcement of an ethnically selective division of la…

The Emergence of Central Immigrant Ghettoes in American Cities
The emergence of concentrations of foreign immigrants on the edge of the expanding central business district was one of the most characteristic manifestations of American urban growth between 1840 and 1920. The settlement of newly arrived immigrants in central urban locations has been closely related to the blighting effects of commercial encroachment into adjacent residential quarters. The concept of blight, however, obscures both the diverse so…

The Victorian Slum
The term slum is a loose definition of the environs and behavior of the poor. Isolated from the remainder of society, slum residents are presumed to live a deviant life either by preference or cultural predisposition, or as a consequence of their deprivation. This synthesis of spatial isolation and social deviance was an inextricable element of changes in attitudes to poverty in the early nineteenth century, and has been remarkably persistent. Th…

A Game Theoretic Analysis of the Components of Punishment
This study examined the interactions of the components of punishment on human subjects. While the effects of certainty and severity were in the expected directions, the main and interaction effects of celerity produced unexpected outcomes-namely, the more immediate the punishment the less the likelihood of behavioral extinction. Moreover, this paradoxical result was found to be contingent on the varying levels of certainty and severity. It is sug…
