The critically acclaimed 2018 Australian film Jirga follows an ex-Australian soldier, Mike Wheeler, who returns to Afghanistan three years after a firefight during which he kills a civilian. • Vanilla Twist Again

Alistair Rolls, Emma Hamilton•ARTICLE•Journal of Asia-Pacific Pop Culture•2023

In the companion piece to this article, the authors discuss John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) from the perspective of what they have dubbed “representational equilibrium,” in which two opposed notions—change over time and absence of transformation—can be shown to pertain at the same time in the same film. This article maps the and-or dynamics of equilibrium onto textual space as something simultaneously autonomous (closed in upon its…

  • Vanilla and/or Vanilla Twist

Emma Hamilton, Alistair Rolls•ARTICLE•Journal of Asia-Pacific Pop Culture•2023

This article explores the nature of political representation in John Carpenter’s 1976 film Assault on Precinct 13. Previous scholars have taken divergent views of the representation, particularly racial representation, in this film, suggesting it is variously apolitical, conservative, or liberal. This article uses the lens of a “representational equilibrium” to explore the ways in which meaning is constructed in this film and, moreover, the ways …

Sally Baker, Evonne Irwin et al.•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 48

In the context of the equity/widening participation policy landscape in Australia, scholarly exploration of alternative pathways into higher education is becoming increasingly important to inform innovative pedagogies, answer complex questions, and improve outcomes and experiences for students. This article focuses on one alternative pathway, ‘enabling’ education, which has a 45-year history in Australia but has, for a variety of reasons, remaine…

  • Using photovoice to identify sexual health needs in Latina early adolescents

    D Sanchez, Josephine V Serrata et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2021

Adolescence is a period of exploration of sexuality and of its integration into personality. Accordingly, this paper presents findings from a photovoice project with 11-12 year old Latina students, implemented to investigate topics related to cultural identity, …

    Emma Hamilton, Diana R Samek et al.•ARTICLE•Adoption Quarterly•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 6

It has been argued that transracial adopted children have increased risk for problems related to self-esteem and ethnic identity development. We evaluated this hypothesis across four groups of transracial adoptees: Asian ( N = 427), Latino ( N = 28), Black ( N = 6), Mixed/Other ( N = 20), and same-race white adoptees ( N = 126) from 357 adoptive families. No mean differences were found in adoptee's ratings of affect about adoption, or of curiosit…
