  • Beyond National Borders: Family Frontiers and Expulsion from the US

    Edgar W Butler, Celia Mancillas Bazán•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 4

1 Revision of a paper presented at the Western Social Science Association, Denver, CO, April 23, 2008. The US has contradictory policies of NAFTA while curbing the flow of Mexicans. Former Mexican “commuters” no longer commute because of not being able to return to Mexico while the possibility of a summary deportation is great. A large number of immigrants in California live in “mixed” legal and illegal families. Deportation, in effect, may have …

    James B Pick, Edgar W Butler•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1998•References: 25

Demographic, social, and economic influences on cause of death are analyzed for Mexico in 1990. The paper draws on epidemiologic transition theory and empirical studies as a framework to examine effects of 28 independent variables in four groups—demographic, socio‐cultural, economic, and housing/health/crime—on standardized mortality by cause. Data at the state level are mostly from the Mexican census of 1990. Effects are analyzed through spatial…

  • Projection of the Mexican National Labor Force, 1980-2005

    James B Pick, Edgar W Butler et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1993•References: 8

Mexico has a large and rapidly growing labor force. This paper projects the Mexican national labor force from 1980 to 2005, with varying assumptions of vital rates, economic activity, and international migration. Projections are also made for the urban and rural components of the Mexican population, assuming inter-component migration flows. Results indicate that the Mexican labor force will grow over the projection period at an average annual rat…

    Edgar W Butler, James B Pick•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•1991•References: 7

This study examines state migration patterns to Baja California for most of the twentieth century. Methods of analysis include computerized mapping and regression. Findings indicate that, in spite of very rapid population growth in Baja California, the geographic distribution for origin states of migration to Baja remained consistent over eighty years of censuses from 1900 to 1980. Furthermore, there is strong consistency in the determinants of m…

    James B Pick, Glenda L Tellis et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1989•References: 26

This study analyzes fertility determinants in the oil region of Mexico, consisting of the states of Veracruz, Tabasco, and Campeche. Data are from the 1980 Mexican census and the unit of analysis is the municipio. The regression models, in which the dependent variables of children ever born and child-woman ratio are examined, reveal religious variables to be most significant, with greater fertility for non-Catholics and persons with no religion t…

  • Acid pits and birth defects: A case study of the Stringfellow acid pits dump site and congenital anomalies

    Edgar W Butler, Hiroshi Fukurai•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1988

This paper examines the relationship between a toxic waste site and congenital anomalies. The Stringfellow acid pits dump site (SAP) located near the City of Riverside, California, is the focus of this study. Congenital anomalies are examined in relation to various demographic and socioeconomic variables. Our analyses suggest that hydrological and geological proximity to the dump site has a significant relationship to birth defects. An analysis o…

Based on stepwise regression methodology, the study compares results for twelve subsamples of married respondents, three age categories by four regions. The dependent variables are children ever born and children ever bom in the last five y…

Previous studies of long-range detrimental labeling effects related to mild mental retardation have failed to control for conditions that impact both the labeling process and social adjustment. In contrast, this research explicity tests the labeling perspective by comparing labeled with not labeled former students 'eligible' for the mentally retarded label. • Projection of farm labor displacement from geothermal development, Imperial County, California, U.S.A

    James B Pick, Edgar W Butler•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1985

A methodology is introduced to project the number of farm laborers displaced by reduction in agricultural land by geothermal energy development. For each geothermal area, the projection is based on estimates of land used for energy facilities and of land environmentally disrupted, on estimates of manpower per acre by crop type, and on estimates of alternative employment of farm laborers. Each area's projected farm labor force displacement per 100…

This ecological research has demonstrated that some factors external to the individual are related to mental disorders. However, ecological studies of other types of impairments are virtually nonexistent. A limited literature suggests that blacks move more often than whites but that their mobility is more local. In testing this double hypothesis with interviews from a national panel of 1,500 households, we find that greater black mobility is largely explained by blacks' tendency to be renters. Black renters are less likely to move, and black owners are about as stable residentially. Furthermore, blacks are more likely to move only within their nig…

Subsequently, Srole constructed interview schedule items to measure personal anomia, and his items have been used by a large number of investigators. Many of these researchers implicitly assumed unidimensionality while others explicitly tested for it by Guttman scaling and factor analysis techniques. However, none of these researchers repeated…
