Counteracting Stigma-Power
The need for emergency food aid is increasing across the United Kingdom (UK). Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 2.5% of UK households accessed food banks. As of June 2022, 15% of households were using food banks, and emerging evidence suggested increased stigma, shame and embarrassment associated with food aid use, food poverty, and food insecurity. This ethnographic study explored food aid user experiences of stigma-power, and antisti…
Evaluation of real-time monitored ozone concentration from Abuja, Nigeria
Real-time ozone (O 3 ) concentration is vital for accurate analysis of O 3 to inform the public about O 3 concentrations that may have an adverse effect on health. Few studies have analysed air pollution in Abuja, Nigeria and non on real-time ozone concentrations. As a result, there is a scarcity of data and information on real-time ozone pollution, pointing to a gap that needs to be urgently closed to enable a better understanding of ozone pollu…

Millenarianism
The term millenarianism, and its alternatives millennialism and chiliasm, are derived from the last book of the Christian Bible, Apocalypse (or Revelation), in which the prophet John recounts his vision of a thousand‐year godly kingdom, the return of Christ, and the end of time itself (20:1–7). In the social sciences, the term is applied to all movements and organizations that hold as a central belief the imminent arrival of a divinely inspired a…

Religion and Enmity in Ireland
Opinions differ as to the role of religion in the Northern Ireland conflict. In this article, religion is located at different levels: institutionally, in the indirect contribution of the Roman Catholic Church and in the direct one of the Orange societies; doctrinally and particularly, in the covenant tradition of fundamentalist Protestantism; at the level of relational beliefs, though especially on the Protestant side; and at the level of cultur…
Modernity and Religious Change in Western Roman Catholicism

Recent Changes in Metropolitan-Nonmetropolitan Migration Streams1
In this paper, we examine the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of migration streams between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas for four different years over the period 1975-1993. During this period, there have been three shifts in the direction of net metro-nonmetro migration. Through nonmetro net in-migration, the 'nonmetropolitan turnaround' of the 1970s reversed historical patterns of nonmetro loss of human resources, with gai…
Religion in Contemporary Europe
The Politics of Spirituality
This book provides the first in-depth case study of ‘Renew’ – a pastoral programme of religious revitalization. The programme originated in the United States in 1976 and has been widely adopted throughout the Roman Catholic world. Initiated from the top down in a hierarchically-structured church, it can be seen as an example of clerical attempts to stimulate and control lay spirituality in an organizationally controlled manner (as opposed to gras…
Ethnicity and state form in the division of Ireland
A straightforward attempt to look at division in Ireland using the concept of ethnicity as central diagnostic has not so far been attempted. After a brief introduction to the Northern Ireland situation, this article explores how conflict there has been examined. It then goes on to see how much explanatory power has been given to the notion of ethnicity in the troubles of Northern Ireland, and clarifies key aspects of a general theory of ethnic gr…

Size of Family, Life Chances, and Reproductive Behavior
Examines the long standing hypothesis that size of family runs in families. It is hypothesized that size of family of origin has 2 main effects on reproductive behavior: a weak direct (family tradition) effect and a stronger indirect (structural) effect through life chances (status attainment). Life chances of both husband and wife are considered. It is hypothesized that size of family influences status attainment which in turn affects fertility.…
Family limitation and age at marriage
This paper examines fertility behaviour in Sturbridge, Massachusetts between 1730 and 1850. The substantial decline in fertility over the period resulted from a combination of a rising female age at marriage and declining fertility within marriage. The authors suggest that declining marital fertility represents the onset of deliberate family limitation and put forward the hypothesis that it is related to the interaction of the culmination of the …
