Centralizing Over-the-Counter Markets
In traditional over-the-counter markets, investors trade bilaterally through intermediaries. We assess whether and how to shift trades on a centralized platform with trade-level data on the Canadian government bond market. We document that intermediaries charge a markup when trading with investors and specify a model to quantify price and welfare effects from market centralization. We find that many investors would not use the platform, even if t…
The Law of Central Bank Reserve Creation
This article explores legal and constitutional dimensions of central banks’ powers to create money, ‘central bank reserves’, through monetary policy operations. Despite the prominence of monetary authority since the Financial Crisis, the law supporting the creation of central bank reserves is very obscure, as is the role of law in structuring constitutional authority over money. We de‐mystify those important matters in three steps. First, we expl…
Impact of Bankruptcy Reform on Consumer Insolvency Choice
We examine the impact of the 2009 amendments to the Canadian Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act on consumer insolvency decisions. The amendments were successful in steering debtors out of Division I debt restructuring and into the more cost-effective Division II debt restructuring. Although total insolvencies remained flat after the amendments, they led to a significant substitution out of bankruptcies and into debt restructuring. The extent of substi…
Search Frictions and Market Power in Negotiated-Price Markets
We provide a framework for empirical analysis of negotiated-price markets. Using mortgage market data and a search and negotiation model, we characterize the welfare impact of search frictions and quantify the role of search costs and brand loyalty for market power. Search frictions reduce consumer surplus by $12/month/consumer, 28% of which can be associated with discrimination, 22% with inefficient matching, and 50% with search costs. Large con…
Where All His Time Was Spent
Pop sanded and stained hardwood floorsuntil his spine revolted, until the chemicalshad seeped into his bloodstream and crackedhis calloused hands. Because of his bulgingbags of dust, because of all those years of steeringthose monstrous motors, with their punishingdecibels like a thousand rawhide beltswhipping at once against the boards, because his work had induceda constant ringing in his eardrums, that same tinnitus as Van Gogh,I could never wor…
This article offers a close reading of the lyrical drama And the Dogs Were Silent, and Aimé Césaire's unique deployment of a Dantean imaginary. It argues, specifically, that Dante's "symbolic process" in the Commedia provides a metaphorical structure for the hero's initiation in this work and for the poet's articulation of a philosophy of postcolonial relationality. Showing how Dante's katabasis is used to analogize the creative power of Césaire'…

Efficiency and economies of scale of large Canadian banks
This paper measures the economies of scale of Canada's six largest banks and their cost‐efficiency over time. Using a unique panel data set from 1983 to 2003, we estimate pooled cost functions and derive measures of relative efficiency and economies of scale. The disaggregation of the data allows us to include non‐traditional outputs as well as time‐varying, bank‐specific effects. Our model leads us to reject constant returns to scale. These find…
