An Equilibrium Model of the Market for Bitcoin Mining
We propose a model which uses the Bitcoin/US dollar exchange rate to predict the computing power of the Bitcoin network. We show that free entry places an upper-bound on mining revenues and we devise a structural framework to measure its value. Calibrating the model’s parameters allows us to accurately forecast the evolution of the network computing power over time. We establish the accuracy of the model through out-of-sample tests and investigat…
Interpreting the “Human Terrain” of Afghanistan with Enlightenment Philosophy
In this paper I advance the proposition that Western policymakers’ perceptions and understandings of the conflict in Afghanistan are heavily influenced by certain political ideas emerging from seventeenth-century Enlightenment philosophy. This is particularly evident with counterinsurgency practitioners’ usage of social science disciplines to produce “objective” information about the local societies with which they are engaged. However, Enlighten…
The securitization of development and humans' insecurity in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan
This article explores the way the USA's efforts to bring a securitized and militarized form of development to Afghanistan have often exacerbated many women's and men's human insecurity in local rural societies. In the countryside of Afghanistan, this development strategy has involved tying the counter-insurgency and counter-narcotics agenda of eliminating poppy crops to a broader neo-liberal goal, premised on building a thriving economy based on …
Recognising the problems with ‘spoiler theory’ in Iraq
This paper draws on two academic articles that highlight the need to resolve the violence of ‘spoilers’, i.e. armed political factions that could spoil a negotiated end to conflict. They both make interesting contributions within their own field of peacekeeping literature but we think that their proposed agenda, which is the study of ‘spoilers’, can be improved with the incorporation of Axel Honneth's ‘Recognition Theory’. While we do not wade in…
The development of a measure of enculturation for Native American youth
Enculturation is the process by which individuals learn about and identify with their ethnic minority culture. It is distinguished from acculturation which refers to the process by which an ethnic minority individual is assimilated into the majority culture. Three studies with Native American youths are reported that describe the development of a measure of enculturation for Native American youths. Development of a measure of enculturation provid…

Joint Electoral Fate of Local Incumbents
Environmental Policy and Competitive Structure: Implications of the Hazardous Waste Management Program
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) assigns the Environmental Protection Agency responsibility for protecting the public from hazards created by industrial wastes. The Agency has understandably used its mandate to construct cradle to grave regulation of waste substances that pose health hazards. The regulations, however, are likely to hike costs of legal disposal by increasing the demand for disposal sites, while at the same…
