  • When Transparency Fails

Erika Deserranno, Gianmarco León et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We study the effect of raising the level and transparency of financial incentives offered to local agents for acquiring clients of a new banking product on take-up. We find that paying agents higher incentives increases take-up and usage, but only when the incentives are unknown to prospective clients. When disclosed, higher incentives have no effect on take-up and usage, despite greater agent effort. This is due to the financial incentives sendi…

  • The Allocation of Incentives in Multilayered Organizations

Gianmarco León, Erika Deserranno et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Does the allocation of incentives across the hierarchy of an organization matter for its performance? In an experiment with a large public health organization, we find that health care provision is highly affected by how incentives are allocated between frontline workers and their supervisors. Sharing incentives equally between these two layers raises health visits by 61% compared with unilateral allocations and uniquely improves health service p…

  • Immigration, labor markets and discrimination

    Open Access•André Gröger, André Groeger et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Venezuela is currently experiencing the biggest crisis in its recent history. This has led more than 7.3 million Venezuelans to emigrate, at least 1.5 million of those to Peru, which amounted to an increase of over 4 percent in the Peruvian population. Venezuelan immigrants in Peru are relatively similar in cultural terms, but, on average, more skilled than Peruvians. In this paper, we first examine Venezuelans’ perceptions of being discriminated…

  • Accountability, Political Capture, and Selection Into Politics

Miriam Artiles, Lukas Kleine-Rueschkamp et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2021

We estimate the effects of political accountability on the selection of politicians when accountability mechanisms are prone to political capture. We compare the characteristics of candidates running in municipalities where the previous incumbent was ousted from office through a recall referendum with those who run where the recall referendum failed by a small margin. Having a recalled incumbent in the previous term causes a negative selection of…

  • Vertical Integration, Supplier Behavior, and Quality Upgrading among Exporters

Christopher Hansman, Jonas Hjort et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 4

We study the relationship between firms’ output quality and organizational structure. Using data onthe production and transaction chain that makes up Peruvian fishmeal manufacturing, we establish threeresults. First, firms integrate suppliers when the quality premium rises for exogenous reasons. Second, suppliers change their behavior to better maintain input quality when vertically integrated. Third, firmsproduce a highershareof high-quality outp…

  • Clientelism in Decentralized States

    Open Access•Gianmarco León, Leonard Wantchekon•CHAPTER•Decentralized Governance and…•2019

Clientelistic networks and decentralization share common organizational features and interact in different ways. They are both multi-tiered structures plagued with agency issues. In this chapter we study these links, reviewing the current scholarship and emphasizing how the different features of political decentralization affect clientelistic politics, and point to avenues for future research. In particular, we emphasize the role clientelistic ne…

  • Urbanization Patterns, Information Diffusion, and Female Voting in Rural Paraguay

Open Access•Alexandra Chong, Alberto Chong et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 40

We use a field experiment to evaluate the impact of two informational get‐out‐the‐vote campaigns to boost female electoral participation in rural areas of Paraguay. We find that public rallies had a small and insignificant effect either on registration or voter turnout in the 2013 presidential elections. Households that received door‐to‐door canvassing treatment were 4.6 percentage points more likely to vote. Experimental variation on the intensi…

  • Privatised Firms and Labour Outcomes in Emerging Markets

Alexandra Chong, Alberto Chong et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2009

A recent large firm-level dataset is analysed to compare labour indicators of privatised, private, and public firms around the world, in particular differences relating to wages, benefits, labour composition, education and training, unionisation, and quality of management. We find that labour productivity and the ratio of permanent to temporary workers increase after privatisation

  • Outsiders?

Heather Berkman, Carmen Pagés et al.•BOOK•2008

This report raises a number of fundamental questions about the multidimensional and interrelated nature of social exclusion and moves beyond the traditional emphasis on outcomes and groups to view exclusion as a process that results from societal traits that limit the functionings of the excluded. Using the tools of experimental economics, the report shows the enormous economic and welfare costs of exclusion, suggesting that inclusion policies sh…
