Speaking from experience: The case for openness about drug use among researchers
Background Researchers with lived or living experience of their subjects of study are uniquely positioned to generate impactful insights by integrating experiential and scholarly knowledge. However, people researching substance use face challenges that may prevent them from actively using their experience in their scholarship. Methods In this commentary, we review the issues facing researchers with lived/living experience of drug use and how these…
Prevalence, Associations and Comorbidity of Cannabis Use and Cannabis Use Disorders in the Australian National Mental Health Surveys From 2007 to 2020–22
Media representation of methamphetamine-related deaths: Exploring links to public stigma and support for harm reduction
Certain characteristics in news stories about drug-related deaths elicit higher stigma towards the depicted person. Thus, improving how the media report and frame drug-related deaths represents an important avenue to reduce stigma towards people who use drugs and in turn foster public support for evidence-based drug policies
The foundational role of sound quality for understanding demonstratives
This paper explores the role of sound quality in the interpretation of demonstratives, arguing that their function is deeply connected to acoustic properties and human auditory perception. Drawing on research from psychoacoustics, sound localization, and philosophical and linguistic theories, I suggest that demonstratives are rooted in fundamental mechanisms of auditory cognition. The discussion begins with an examination of echolocation in bats,…

No One Is Who They Say They Are: The Political Aesthetics of David Peace, Waste Land Poetry, and Extreme Music
This article constructs a genealogy of anti-imperialist cultural practice, connecting novels and spoken word projects of David Peace to post–World War II Japanese poetry and to the extreme music practice of the powerviolence band Column of Heaven. By placing Peace's novels in conversation with these different cultural forms, it aims to show how the modernist mystification can augment the radical political effects of popular art during the era of …
Effectiveness of online training for improving knowledge, attitudes, and confidence of alcohol and other drug workers in relation to co-occurring mental health conditions
There is increasing recognition that the high rates of co-occurring mental disorders among clients of substance use treatment services require alcohol and other drugs (AOD) workers to be skilled in their identification, management, and treatment. Despite advances in e-learning, to our knowledge, based on our review of the literature, there are no training programs with the capacity to build foundational knowledge, attitudes, and confidence in men…

Long-term patterns of treatment use for opioid use disorder (OUD): Findings from the 18-20-year Australian Treatment Outcome Study
In one of the longest cohort studies of its kind, we characterised distinct trajectories of treatment use in people with heroin dependence over 18-20-years. Clinicians should be aware of the potential impact of demographics and substance use on long-term treatment use. Despite the well-documented benefits of long-term treatment, some patients may be able to achieve abstinence from opioids without engaging in treatment over the life-course
Nogai the Khanmaker: A Historiographical Problem
Research objectives: Nogai, a great-grandson of Jochi, is most commonly known as the all-mighty kingmaker of the late thirteenth century Golden Horde, who in scholarship is portrayed as appointing and deposing khans at will and establishing an independent khanate on the lower Danube. However, the author argues that this is a portrayal with little basis in the primary source materials, and instead largely a creation of the secondary literature. T…
Transcoding Between Hyper-Antagonistic Milieus: Studies on the Cross-Platform Relations Between Radical Political Web Subcultures
This panel brings together research into the cross-platform relations between radical Web subcultures and how they are constitutive of “hyper-antagonistic” politics in broader Web discourses. The papers share a concern with vernacular practices of “fringe” platforms favoured by an insurgent far-right movement and their relations to more “mainstream” social media. They engage with the concept of “transcoding between milieus” (Deleuze & Guattari 19…
Applying Politeness Research: An Introduction to the Soto Data
Wireless sensor networks have become incredibly popular due to the Internet of Things' (IoT) rapid development.IoT routing is the basis for the efficient operation of the perception-layer network. As a popular type of machine learning, reinforcement learning techniques have gained significant attention due to their successful application in the field of network communication. In the traditional Routing Protocol for lowpower and Lossy Networks (RPL)…
Courtroom data and politeness research: A case for neo-Peircean semiotics in interpersonal pragmatics
In this article we take a neo-Peircean semiotic approach to analyzing an interaction in which a routine bail hearing between a defendant and a judge goes awry. Neo-Peircean semiotics is steadily gaining recognition within linguistics for providing a new perspective on meaning. One neo-Peircean approach, referred to as Relationship Thinking (Enfield 2009, 2013), has the potential to be influential for politeness research and linguistic pragmatics …
Gesture in Modern South Arabian languages: Variation in multimodal constructions during task-based interaction
Until fairly recently most linguistic fieldwork relied on written records of spoken data or audio-only recordings. The recent increase in research focusing on audio-visual data, with emphasis on the co-expressiveness of speech and gesture, has led to a greater understanding of the relationship between language, gesture and thought. In this paper, we discuss gesture and what it illuminates linguistically in two Modern South Arabian Languages: Mehr…

Ontological Butchery: Organism Concepts and Biological Generalizations
Biology lacks a central organism concept that unambiguously marks the distinction between organism and non-organism because the most important questions about organisms do not depend on this concept. I argue that the two main ways to discover useful biological generalizations about multicellular organization—the study of homology within multicellular lineages and of convergent evolution across lineages in which multicellularity has been independe…
