Port labour, global commodities, and material skill development
This article explores the role and representation of port warehouse labour in late nineteenth- and twentieth-century global commodity chains. Its lens is the Port of London’s Ivory Floor at St. Katherine’s Dock (built 1860, closed 1968), and its chief focus the warehouse workers and commercial agents who prepared ivory for market, as well as the Port’s publicity department who marketed their work through commissioned photographs and newspaper acc…
Vegetal/Digital
Arising out of the heightened sensory perceptions of extended lockdown, this creative investigation began with contemplation of flowering street-trees. By combining analysis of textual, visual and material sources with theoretical approaches to material culture and gift exchange from anthropology, scholars have increasingly come to examine colonial diplomacy not only through the high-politics and text-based operations …
Diplomatic Gifts
This article examines the material underpinnings of the political diplomacy pursued by Ugandan leaders towards European colonial figures in the late nineteenth century. Imperial historians have traditionally understood the institutional processes of treaty-making, diplomacy and state administration as part of the workings of the European “Official Mind.” As such, analyses have been overwhelmingly based upon written colonial sources such as govern…
