  • Zooarchaeological analysis of the Raşcov 7 Upper Palaeolithic site (Republic of Moldova)

    Open Access•L Demay, R Croitor et al.•ARTICLE•L Anthropologie•2024•References: 29

  • Tracing Old Gestures: A Multiscale Analysis of Ground Stone Tools Developed on Sequential Lab-Controlled Replicative Experiments

Open Access•Giusi Sorrentino, Laura Longo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 23

This article presents an analytical procedure developed to replicate, document, and analyse the formation and evolution of use-wear traces on task-specific ground stone tools. The purpose of this study is to build a reference collection for wear patterns that occurred during the processing of vegetal resources, specifically those compatible with the MIS 3 period. To create the collection, riverine slabs and pebbles were utilised and various aspec…

  • The history of the domestic cat in Central Europe

    Open Access•Magdalena Krajcarz, M T Krajcarz et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 12

A recent study from Central Europe has changed our perception of the cat's domestication history. The authors discuss how this has led to the development of an interdisciplinary project combining palaeogenetics, zooarchaeology and radiocarbon dating, with the aim of providing insight into the domestic cat's expansion beyond the Mediterranean

  • Gravettian and Epigravettian personal ornaments in Eastern Carpathians

  • A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Investigate Use-Related Biogenic Residues on Palaeolithic Ground Stone Tools

Laura Longo, Simona Altieri et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 11•References: 29

Recent advances in the role played by dietary carbohydrates in human food webs during the Palaeolithic highlight that starchy foods were part of the diet well before crop domestication. Although certain plants can be eaten raw, intentional processing such as mechanical reduction using stone tools and thermal treatment readily increases the assimilation of nutrients for metabolic functions and for storing. We present a multi-techniques approach de…

  • Wind Instruments in the Mid Upper Palaeolithic of the Eastern Carpathians

    Marin Cârciumaru, Elena-Cristina Nițu et al.•ARTICLE•Annales d Université Valahia…•2019•Cited by: 1

Three perforated reindeer phalanxes, hitherto unknown, found in the Brînzeni and Duruitoarea Veche caves in the Republic of Moldova, are discussed in comparison with the perforated reindeer phalanx from Poiana Cireșului-Piatra Neamț in Romania, which has anthropic working marks to be considered a genuine wind instrument in the Late Gravettian. Furthermore, a mammalian diaphysis from the Duruitoarea Veche Cave, unfortunately split in two, with fou…

The ornaments come from occupations falling in between 26-27 ka uncal. BP and 17 ka uncal. BP. The study of ornaments of this homogeneous and restrict…

  • A woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ) carcass from Maly Lyakhovsky Island (New Siberian Islands, Russian Federation)

    Open Access•Semyon E Grigoriev, Daniel C Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

A partial carcass of an adult woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) found in 2012 on Maly Lyakhovsky Island presents a new opportunity to retrieve associated anatomical, morphological, and life history data on this important component of Pleistocene biotas. In addition, we address hematological, histological, and microbiological issues that relate directly to quality of preservation. Recovered by staff from North-Eastern Federal University in Ya…
