Luminescence chronology of the northeastern Bulgarian loess-paleosol sequences (Viatovo and Kaolinovo)
Green amphibole distribution as a stratigraphic tool in loess sequences from Belgium
During the new excavations at Boineşti (2005– 2006), Middle Palaeolithic and Aurignacian artefacts have been discovered within the loessic deposits. Three archaeological units (D, C1, C) have been identified. The raw material is varied. IRSL dating of these loessic deposits indicates that the Mousterian material (unit D) belongs to MIS 3 and that the Aurignacian material (units C1 and C) has been reworked during the Holocene. During this reworkin…

The Identification of Granitic Fire-Cracked Rocks Using Luminescence of Alkali Feldspars
The question of Fire-Cracked Rock (FCR) in Woodland contexts has become an important and controversial topic in Western Great Lakes archaeology. There are no clear and widely accepted criteria for distinguishing FCR when the rocks show no observable characteristics associated with fire (heating and cooling). To help overcome this shortcoming, we analyzed both the thermoluminescence (TL) and the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of alkali fe…
Late Stage 5 Glacio-isostatic Sea in the St. Lawrence Valley, Canada and United States
Although post-glacial marine sediments of late Wisconsinan and early Holocene age are common in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, remnants of older Pleistocene marine sediments are scarce. A fossiliferous marine clay that predates the classical Wisconsinan was recently discovered in the St. Lawrence Valley. A dominantly estuarine environment is inferred from the geochemistry of the shells (δ 18 O = −7.1) and from benthic foramini…
Thermoluminescence Dating of the Middle Pleistocene Raised Beach of Sangatte (Northern France)
TL dating of both quartz and potassium feldspar grains from the Pleistocene beach of Sangatte, at the southern limit of the North Sea Basin, give self-consistent ages of 200,000 ± 45,000, 205,000 ± 14,000, and 229,000 ± 18,000 years, respectively. These results allow the beach deposits to be correlated with oxygen isotope stage 7 (244,000–190,000 yr) (Martinson et al. , 1987). The existence of a fossil beach cliff line at 10 m above French O.D. d…
Chronological Separation of Interglacial Raised Beaches from Northwestern Europe Using Thermoluminescence
Thermoluminescence (TL) age estimates have been obtained on coarse-grained detrital feldspar from Eemian beach sand (substage 5 e ), early Weichselian dune sands (substages 5 d and 5 b ), and pre-Eemian beach sand. The past radiation dose is obtained using the additive dose method. Even for the oldest samples, which date to 300,000 yr B.P. by other methods, the TL signal is not in saturation and can be doubled by the addition of laboratory radiat…
