Zooarchaeological analysis of the Raşcov 8 Upper Palaeolithic site (Republic of Moldova)
The Palaeolithic site of Raşcov 8, discovered in the 1950's, was recently subjected to new investigations. It yielded archaeological layers from the Upper Pleniglacial. We used zooarchaeological methods to deepen knowledge about this site. We focused on the taphonomy , the anatomical representation of the different species and the anthropogenic activities to better determine the use of natural resources by humans, in particular of animal origin, …
A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Investigate Use-Related Biogenic Residues on Palaeolithic Ground Stone Tools
Recent advances in the role played by dietary carbohydrates in human food webs during the Palaeolithic highlight that starchy foods were part of the diet well before crop domestication. Although certain plants can be eaten raw, intentional processing such as mechanical reduction using stone tools and thermal treatment readily increases the assimilation of nutrients for metabolic functions and for storing. We present a multi-techniques approach de…
Study of human behaviors during the late pleniglacial in the East European Plain through their relation to the animal world
The late Pleniglacial was characterized by different palaeoenvironmental and geographical modifications, which affected the diverse living beings that had to adapt to those peculiar conditions. This paper intends to explore how this phenomenon may have impacted the practices of the nomadic human populations who occupied the East European Plain during the last part of the Pleistocene, through their relation to the environments, landscapes, overall…
Preliminary results of studies of the Valea Morilor Upper Palaeolithic site (Chişinău, Republic of Moldova)
Preliminary results are presented from the studies of a newly found Paleolithic site – Valea Morilor (Chişinău, Republic of Moldova). The excavations produced unquestionable evidence of mammoth hunting (Mammuthus primigenius Blumenbach, 1799). Excavations of 2009–2010 opened an area of 1264 m2. Three radiocarbon datings (14C) of the fragments of fossil bones of mammots performed in the Gröningen University gave very similar results: in the excava…
