Tracking the Dynamics of human Colonisation and Adaptation in Central Vanuatu
In October 2022 an extensive archaeological landscape was identified by staff of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre at Pangpang on the east coast of Efate Island in central Vanuatu. It included midden deposits on the banks of the Pangpang River near the sea at Forari Bay where Lapita and Early Erueti‐style pottery sherds were recovered. Later Mangaasi‐style pottery was found nearby and further inland across much of the wider landscape. This is the only …
Midwife to the Unconscious
This “enterview” explores the profound insights and therapeutic approaches of Attracta Fahy, an integrative and humanistic psychotherapist whose work is deeply rooted in Jungian depth psychology and Biodynamic psychotherapy. Fahy’s therapeutic philosophy centers on facilitating transformation through a “midwife approach,” allowing clients to bridge the split between psyche and soma. Drawing on her experiences in hospice care, psychotherapy superv…
Kuwae, Epi and Tongoa Islands
This paper presents a detailed overview of archaeological research undertaken on Epi and Tongoa, in central Vanuatu. These islands were previously connected to one another and respectively formed the western and eastern portions of Kuwae, one of the largest islands in the Vanuatu archipelago, until the catastrophic Tombuk volcanic eruption separated them in the mid‐fifteenth century AD. Oral traditions and insights drawn from previous ethnographi…

“Opening the Heart”
Stones are both heavily symbolic and down to earth. In response to a severe heart attack 20 years ago, Steve Parker began working with stones to create a place to retreat and a haven to heal. The stonework took on a life of its own and became a stone sanctuary, featuring many unique stone structures. It is a temenos, a special place for his clients and himself to reflect and connect with larger forces. The most recent work is a large 50-foot sunk…

Vowel Deletion as Grammatically Controlled Gestural Overlap in Uspanteko
Uspanteko is an endangered Mayan language spoken in Guatemala. Unstressed vowels in Uspanteko often delete, though deletion is variable within and across speakers. Deletion appears to be phonological: it is sensitive to foot structure, morphology, and certain phonotactics, and it occurs in slow, careful speech. But deletion also has characteristics more typical of a phonetic process: it is intertwined with a pattern of gradient vowel reduction an…
Xoqoneb’
Uspanteko is one of the smallest (in terms of speakers) and most threatened Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala. While Uspanteko belongs to the K’ichean branch of the Mayan family, it bears a striking number of linguistic features not seen in its sister languages across major aspects of the grammar, including phonetics/phonology (e.g., lexical tone) and morphosyntax (e.g., null verbal inflection). After introducing an Uspanteko text about the sac…
The phonetics and phonology of Uspanteko (Mayan)
Uspanteko is an endangered Mayan language spoken by up to 6000 people in the Guatemalan highlands. We provide an overview of the phonetics and phonology of Uspanteko, focussing on phenomena which are common in Mayan languages and/or typologically interesting. These include glottalised consonants (ejectives, implosives, and glottal stop), uvular consonants, vowel length contrasts, syllable structure, stress, and lexical tone. Tone is unusual among…

The Wounded Healer
This article is an edited transcript of a long-distance conversation with three elders in the Jungian community discussing a topic of vital importance to each of them: the wounded healer. Robert Henderson, Jungian psychotherapist from Glastonbury, Connecticut, interviews analysts Ken Larsen (Boston, Massachusetts), Sharon Heath (Los Angeles, CA), and Christa Robinson (Zürich, Switzerland). The interview explores the archetype of the wounded heale…

Donkeys under discussion
Donkey sentences have existential and universal readings, but they are not often perceived as ambiguous. We extend the pragmatic theory of non-maximality in plural definites by Križ (2016) to explain how hearers use Questions under Discussion to fix the interpretation of donkey sentences in context. We propose that the denotations of such sentences involve truth-value gaps — in certain scenarios the sentences are neither true nor false — and demo…

Expressive updates, much
This article investigates a novel use of much in a construction that has not yet been recognized in the theoretical literature-as in Angry, much?-which we dub 'expressive much'. Our primary proposal is that expressive much is a shunting operator in the sense of McCready 2010, which targets a gradable predicate and adds a speaker's evaluative attitude about the degree to which an individual stands out on the relevant scale. In particular, we argue…

Prosodic Smothering in Macedonian and Kaqchikel
This article deals with a so-far unnoticed phenomenon in prosodic phonology, which we dub prosodic smothering. Prosodic smothering arises when the prosodic status of a clitic or affix varies with the presence or absence of some outer morpheme. We first illustrate prosodic smothering with novel data from two genetically unrelated languages, Macedonian (Slavic) and Kaqchikel (Mayan). We then provide a unified account of prosodic smothering based on…
Pluractionality in Mayan
The term “pluractional” originates in Newman 1980 to describe a particular class of derived verb stems in Chadic languages that had up until that point been called “intensive”. The descriptive intuition that underlies their renaming is that these stems uniformly denote plural actions. For instance, reduplicating the initial syllable of the Hausa verb nèemí ‘seek’ generates a new stem nàn-nèemí meaning ‘to seek all over’ or ‘to seek a lot’ ( Newma…
Vladimir Burtsev and the Struggle for a Free Russia
Vladimir Burtsev and the Struggle for a Free Russia examines the life of the journalist, historian and revolutionary, Vladimir Burtsev. The book analyses his struggle to help liberate the Russian people from tsarist oppression in the latter half of the 19th century before going on to discuss his opposition to Bolshevism following the Russian Revolution of 1917. Robert Henderson traces Burtsev's political development during this time and explores …

The Geology of Australia
This book documents the rich and spectacular heritage of the Australian continent over the last 4400 million years. Now in its third edition, The Geology of Australia provides a comprehensive overview of Australia's geology, landscapes and Earth resources. Beginning with the Precambrian rocks that hold clues to the origins of life and the development of an oxygenated atmosphere, it goes on to cover the warm seas, volcanism and episodes of mountai…

Accent in Uspanteko
Uspanteko (Guatemala; ∼2000 speakers) is an endangered K’ichean-branch Mayan language. It is unique among the K’ichean languages in having innovated a system of contrastive pitch accent, which operates alongside a separate system of non-contrastive stress. The prosody of Uspanteko is of general typological interest, given the relative scarcity of ‘mixed’ languages employing both stress and lexical pitch. Drawing from a descriptive grammar and fro…

Dependent indefinites and their post-suppositions
This paper presents an analysis of a new scope puzzle that arises through the interaction of two lesser-studied constructions, dependent indefinites and verbal pluractionality. The result is a novel account of dependent indefinites that correctly predicts their grammaticality with pluractionals by recognizing two ways of establishing the covariation they require: (i) true distributive quantifiers, and (ii) pluractional operators that structure th…

Mayan Semantics
This article has two interlocked goals. The first is to highlight the strands of research that have played an important role in shaping our understanding of Mayan language semantics. The second is to acquaint non-Mayanists, and especially semanticists, with empirical phenomena that might prove especially interesting on typological or theoretical grounds. Given its particular dual mandate, this article cannot be an exhaustive survey of Mayan seman…
The Hyde Park Rally of 9 March 1890
In December 1889 The Times carried a report detailing the killing of a group of Russian political exiles in Yakutsk, Siberia. Public outrage at this atrocity was compounded two months later with news of the flogging and suicide of female political prisoners in another Siberian penal colony. These events sparked a series of international protests, and the British reaction culminated in a march and rally in Hyde Park. This article examines the caus…
The Employment Performance of Established Manufacturing Industry in the Scottish New Towns
Manufacturing employment growth arises from either the opening of new units or the expansion of existing ones. The new towns in Scotland have attracted a relatively large share of employment in new openings, and particularly in incoming establishments. It is less clear whether, once established, manufacturing units have grown faster in the new towns than elsewhere. This paper uses establishment based data to investigate this issue. It concludes t…

The Shadow Within Friendship
Ann Lammers (AL): This takes a preface, a detour into White’s theology. Trying to talk with Jung about the nature of evil, its relationship to God and to the creation, was a major problem for White. Among other things, he could not agree with Jung that evil is as substantial as good. White held the orthodox Catholic view of evil, which says that the cosmos was originally and fundamentally good because it was created by God who is all good and all…
Depth Healing
This is an interview with Murray Stein, Ph.D., Jungian analyst and past president of the International Association of Analytical Psychology. He discussed contemporary cultural attitudes and their impact on the choice of analytic work rather than short-term therapy and pharmaceutical approaches. In a culture of short-term feel-good therapy, Jungian psychoanalysis does not offer fast food but requires care, time, and intense engagement with the sou…
International Collaboration in the Persecution of Russian Political Émigrés
V. L. Burtsev is renowned as a spy‐buster, the 'Sherlock Holmes of the Russian Revolution', as a consequence of his role in 1908 in revealing Evno Azef, head of the SR terrorist organization, to be a police agent, as well as other similar feats. However, little is known of Burtsev's earlier role as one of the tsarist regime's most feared opponents – a role that saw him hunted and harried throughout Europe from the moment of his arrival in emigrat…

The Search for the Lost Soul
The Red Book is an edited version of Jung's active imaginations, inner dialogues, musings, and private thoughts that he recorded in his Black Book notebooks. Through it, we see Jung’s search for his soul. This “enterview” contains Murray Stein’s initial reactions to The Red Book, including some of the things he never knew, for instance, that Jung named the Red Book, Liber Novus, and how many references there are to the figure of Christ. Stein com…
