Relabeling in Language Genesis
The Relabeling-Based Theory of Creole Genesis
The content of this chapter is intended to introduce the relabeling-based theory of creole genesis to readers who are not familiar with it, as well as to present its latest developments to those who are. This chapter thus contains a summary of the relabeling-based (a.k.a. relexification) theory of creole genesis as it has been updated over the last fifteen years. In this approach, relabeling plays a central role in the genesis of creoles; other p…

A comparison of the nominal structures of Saramaccan, Fongbe and English with reference to Haitian Creole
Creoles, their Substrates, and Language Typology
Since creole languages draw their properties from both their substrate and superstrate sources, the typological classification of creoles has long been a major issue for creolists, typologists, and linguists in general. Several contradictory proposals have been put forward in the literature. For example, creole languages typologically pair with their superstrate languages (Chaudenson 2003), with their substrate languages (Lefebvre 1998), or even,…
Creoles Their Substrates And Language Typology
The contribution of relexification, grammaticalisation, and reanalysis to creole genesis and development
The theory of creole genesis developed in Lefebvre (1998 and related work) is formulated within the framework of the processes otherwise known to play a role in language genesis and language change in general, that is, relexification, grammaticalisation and reanalysis. This paper evaluates the respective contribution of these processes to creole genesis and development. The following issues are taken up. Can functional categories undergo relexifi…

Relabelling
The problem of language contact may be taken up from two opposite angles: the processes at work in language contact situations or the language contact varieties. In this paper, I look at contact phenomena from the former angle. I focus on one process: relabelling, a mental operation that consists in assigning a lexical entry of a given language, L1, a new label taken from another language, L2. The aim of this paper is threefold: first, to assess …
A diachronic and synchronic account of the multifunctionality of Saramaccan táa
This paper bears on the properties and on the historical derivation of the multifunctional lexical item táa in Saramaccan, an English and Portuguese based Creole of Surinam. Táa fulfills several functions : it may be used as a verb, a complementiser, a quotative marker, and as a marker conveying similarity or manner. Táa is thus a multifunctional lexical item. Its functions parallel in a remarkable way those of the semantically closest substrate …
On the properties of Saramaccan FU
The form fu (variant u ) fulfills several functions. It is a preposition selecting NPs and clauses, tensed or infinitival. It is a mood marker occurring either between the subject and the verb, or before the subject. It is a complementiser selected by predicates of the want -class; as such it is in a paradigmatic relationship with other complementisers in the language. Finally, in some contexts, fu appears to function as a case marker, rather tha…

The interplay of relexification and levelling in creole genesis and development
This paper bears on the relationship between relexification and levelling, two processes that play a role in Creole genesis and development. It is a well-documented fact that situations where creoles develop involve several substratum languages and one (or at least one major) superstratum language. Relexification of several substratum languages on the basis of a single/major superstratum language provides the creole community with a common lexico…

Substratum Semantics in the Verbal Lexicon of Haitian Creole
The aim of this paper is to document the presence of substratum semantics in the verbal inventory of Haitian creole on the basis of a comparison of a sample of verbs in Haitian, French (its lexifier language) and Fongbe (one of its substratum languages). The paper begins with a comparison of the meanings of a sample of Haitian, French and Fongbe verbs. Although the phonological representations of the Haitian verbs are derived from the phonetic re…

Multifunctionality and Variation Among Grammars
A multifunctional item is a lexical item that has more than one function. This paper argues that the determiner of Haitian and Fongbe is a multifunctional head. It can appear as the head of several functional category projections, namely, DP, MoodP, TP, and AspP. Given the Projection Principle, how can a single functional item appear as the head of different functional category projections? My account of the multifunctional character of such func…

New facts from Fongbe on the double object constructions
Quechua's loss, Spanish's gain
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate an aspect of the adaptive property of languages. While scholars have shown that expansion in function is correlated with expansion of the linguistic structure, I show that a loss of function by a language may entail a loss of a particular linguistic distinction. The data used to illustrate this point are drawn from the bilingual community of Cuzco, Peru. (Language contact, the adaptive property of langua…

Raising as Move Case
This paper proposes an analysis for the facts of Raising as they occur in the Cuzco dialect of Quechua. The proposed analysis reduces to 'Move CASE' which shares the basic properties of 'Move Wh' as described in Chomsky (1977). This analysis sheds light on the complex facts of Quechua and it contributes to the refinement of some aspects of the GB theory, namely Case Theory, Theta theory, and Binding theory. Unbounded Wh-movement and stative-like …

Haitian Creole Syntax
In this paper we examine several aspects of Haitian Creole syntax in light of the recent proposal that a determiner can be the head of a minor maximal projection. We argue that an incorporation of this proposal into the analysis of several aspects of Haitian Creole syntax, including clause structure, question formation, and relative-clause formation, can resolve several puzzling problems. In addition, the paper adds to the theory of minor heads i…
Haitian Creole Morphology
This paper summarizes the findings of an extensive study of Haitian Creole morphology as compared with that of contributing languages: French, the lexifier language, and Fon, the West African language selected as the substratum language. The proposal we want to argue for in this paper is that, although the phonetic matrices of Haitian Creole lexical items are recognizable as being from French, at a more abstract level the productive affixes of Ha…
Instrumental Take- Serial Constructions in Haitian and in Fon
Since the paper by Jansen et al (1978), it is a well-known fact that serializing languages divide into two major groups: those which have Take -serial constructions and those which don’t. Haitian creole has Take -serial constructions, as exemplified in (l): (1) Jan pran kabrit ale nan mache John take goat go in market ‘John brought the goat in the market.’ Among the languages which have Take -serial constructions, languages further divide into tw…
Morphological Processes in Haitian Creole
In this paper we examine the morphology of Haitian with respect to two issues widely discussed in the literature on creoles: 1) the substratum issue, formulated in our view in terms of the role played by relexification in the formation of Haitian Creole; and 2) the widespread assumption that creole languages are morphologically simpler than their lexifier language. These two issues are not unrelated. The morphological simplicity assumption is bas…

AGR in Languages Without Person and Number Agreement
In recent literature on the decomposition of INFL (Pollock 1989), it has been proposed that the features of agreement morphology (henceforth the Ф features), and the features of Tense, each head a separate projection, AGR and T, respectively. There are languages which do not exhibit agreement in Ф features. This raises the question as to whether these languages have a functional category AGR. Kornfilt (1989), for example, shows that in contrast t…
Dominance vs. Precedence in the Double Object Construction
Since the paper by Barss and Lasnik (1986), the fact that the double object construction exhibits Theme/Goal asymmetries has been the object of an important debate in the literature. The central question of this discussion is whether these asymmetries should be accounted for in terms of dominance (e.g., Larson 1988, 1990; Aoun and Li 1989; den Dikken 1991) or precedence (e.g., Barss and Lasnik 1986; Jackendoff 1990; Tremblay 1991). On the dominan…

The Tense, Mood, and Aspect System of Haitian Creole and the Problem of Transmission of Grammar in Creole Genesis
It is often assumed that creolization involves a break in the transmission of grammar. On the basis of data drawn from the TMA system of Haitian creole, as compared with those of its source languages — French, the superstratum language, and Fongbe, one of the substratum languages — this paper argues that creolization does not involve a break in transmission of grammar. The properties of the Haitian creole TMA system are shown to reflect in a syst…
