Salient Language in Context (SLIC): A web app for collecting real-time attention data in response to audio samples
This article introduces Salient Language in Context (SLIC), a web application designed for collecting real-time attention data from listeners in response to audio samples. SLIC enables researchers to capture timestamped attention points as listeners engage with spoken language, allowing for an innovative approach to studying real-time perception of speech. The application facilitates the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data, provi…
The Effects of Age and Gender on the Perceptions of Linguistic Variation in the Qassimi Arabic Dialect
This article examines the effects of age and gender on perceptions that speakers of Qassimi Arabic, a variety of Najdi Arabic spoken in central Saudi Arabia, have of the placement and extent of dialect areas marked on hand-drawn maps representing variation within their own dialect. Analysis of composite maps of respondents' perceptions using a GIS mapping program (ArcGIS) reveals that both age and gender have an effect on respondents' perceptions…

Evaluating S(c)illy voices: The effects of salience, stereotypes, and co-present language variables on real-time reactions to regional speech
This article explores the relationship between salience, stereotypes, and cooccurring language variables in the social perception of language. Following previous work, we argue that sociolinguistic perception is dependent upon the ability of listeners to map the linguistic cues contained in a speech signal to stereotypes. However, we contend that the understanding of which language features contribute to those stereotypes, and how they do so in t…
The effect of proximity in perceptual dialectology
This article examines the effect of proximity on perceptual dialectological data gathered in Northern Great Britain. It underlines the key effect that proximity has on respondent mental maps of language variation, and demonstrates this by discussing area recognition levels and map-based data. The article demonstrates that the effects of physical proximity can be modified by various factors. These factors include the 'barrier effect' of national b…
