Dynamic Syntax in a Theory of Types with Records
This paper presents a recasting of key aspects of dynamic syntax (DS) in a theory of types with records (TTR), concentrating on the incremental processing of speech events as they unfold and viewed in terms of classifying these events in terms of grammatical types and making predictions about future types that will be realized as the speech event progresses. TTR, like DS, attempts to provide formal analyses of language in terms of a theory of act…
Semantic conflict in online discussions: Negotiating the meaning of lying
This article presents a study on the negotiation of word meaning in the context of semantic conflict. Focusing on online discussions about whether it is acceptable to deceive children about the existence of Santa Claus, we analyse the linguistic dynamics observed in an online Swedish discussion forum. We explore how participants negotiate the meaning and appropriateness of the word ljuga (‘lying’). Our findings reveal that positioning oneself in …
On Developments in Ethnographic Research: The Case of Two Swedish Universities
The past 40 years have formed a transitional period in Sweden's education and political history. The social democratic reforms from the 1940s that aimed to create a centralised, expanded and integrated comprehensive education system came to an end. Decentralisation, neoliberal governance and the introduction of new public management with the creation of private schools and competition have shaped the policy regime since then. Ethnography emerged …
‘I have my own picture of what the demands are … ’: Grading in Swedish PEH — problems of validity, comparability and fairness
The main purpose of this study is to focus on Swedish PE teachers’ experiences with a criterion-referenced grading system and its practical consequences. It aims specifically at investigating the dimensionality of grades and how teacher reason and effectuate when grading students. The study consists of two parts: quantitative data collection of grades in PE given between 2000 and 2009 and 20 semi-structured interviews with PE teachers that were a…
A pluralist view of generalization in qualitative research
A common way of discussing generalisation is to search for one conception – a monist view. Another approach is to create a dichotomy between quantitative and qualitative research, each having a single definition – a dualist perspective. A pluralist view is argued for here, i.e. the existence of several lines of reasoning, each of which can be evaluated in specific cases in terms of usefulness, strengths and weaknesses. Five different lines of rea…

Creating a ‘world class’ programme: Reciprocity and constraint in networked global collaboration
The article reflects on the construction of a common Master’s programme across four universities located on four continents, in order to explore the role of networks in international educational collaboration. The study draws on the documented processes of the principal members of the programme team. It is presented as a case study of the development of the programme that uses ideas drawn from actor‐network theory to draw attention to the conjunc…
Ethnography in action. How ethnography was established in Swedish educational research
The emergence of new research practices is the general theme in this text. The case is ethnography as an approach in Swedish educational research. Ethnography is now an established approach in educational research in Sweden. What was the process behind this position? The article will follow a trajectory that starts in the 1960s and discuss how ethnography was established and consolidated in educational research in Sweden. The article discerns fiv…
Seven aspects of democracy as related to study circles
It is estimated that between 1.2–1.6 million Swedes take part each year in various study circles. These are considered to be significant for democracy. The empirical evidence for this claim is scrutinized in this text. The theoretical basis for the interpretation is meanings given to the concept of democracy in the discourse on democracy. Seven qualitatively different aspects of democracy are thus highlighted: equal participation, horizontal rela…
Innovations, competitiveness and local embeddedness: A study of machinery producers in sweden
This paper is about technological relations and firm performance in the Swedish machinery industry. Taking its point of departure in the proliferating literature on the localized nature of learning and innovation processes, the paper sets out to answer three empirical questions: To what extent are firms integrated in localized production systems based on buyer‐supplier relations? At what geographical level–local/regional, national or internationa…

Initial encounters in formal adult education
This paper reports on part of an ethnographic study of a class participating in Swedish municipal adult education. The study focuses on decision‐making and the power‐play between students and teachers, viewed as a negotiation. The qualitative analysis resulted in a conceptual system for describing the negotiations. Using this system, characteristics of the decision‐making process are described. One of the findings was that uniform explicit rules …
