Statutory regulation in somatology
A Profession at a Precipice Somatology in South Africa occupies a paradoxical position. Evolving from vocational beauty therapy into a rigorous university discipline, it now encompasses scientifically grounded curricula in anatomy, dermatology, and holistic health management, accredited at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Levels 6 through 8. This academic rigour equips somatologists to perform complex, minimally invasive procedures, from l…
Cultural Politics and Iconography
This collection of papers reflects on the many dimensions of contemporary narratives of iconography in public culture in Australia and Asia. The idea for the volume arose from a series of seminars held at the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research in 2002. The series ‘Iconographies’ was convened by Penny Edwards and centred on research undertaken in the Asia-Pacific, with papers that interrogated national and cultural icons. Just as a biography might…
Consuming Urban Culture in Contemporary Vietnam
Vietnam is currently undergoing a metamorphosis from a relatively closed society with a centrally planned economy, to a rapidly urbanising one with a global outlook. These changes have been the catalyst for an exciting ferment of activity in popular culture. This volume contains contributions from scholars engaged in the most up-to-date social research in Vietnam, as well as some of Vietnam's most popular cultural producers who are forging new wa…
Rogue Flows
"Rogue Flows brings together some of the best and most knowledgeable writers on consumption and cultural theory to chart the under-explored field of cultural flows and consumption across different regions in Asia, and the importance of these flows in creating contemporary Asian national identities. It offers innovative possibilities for envisioning how the transfer of popular and consumer culture (such as TV, music, film, advertising and commodit…
Transitions in Taste in Vietnam and the Diaspora
This paper argues that food and styles of eating have become the predominant markers of social change for the Vietnamese in both Vietnam and in the diaspora. In post-socialist Vietnam the transition to a market economy has allowed for a huge growth in the number of restaurants and cafés, and in the north, a return to an earlier style of cooking. The intense interest and emphasis on food as embodied pleasure has meant that it has come to stand for…
Young women and emergent postsocialist sensibilities in contemporary Vietnam
The material we have collected for analysis is from interviews in Hanoi as well as from popular texts newspapers magazines films and internet sites. From October to November 2001 and November to December 2002 Mandy Thomas conducted a series of interviews with young people in Hanoi in five internet cafes located in the densely populated old city centrally located near Hoan Kiem Lake. Internet cafes in Hanoi are the principal sites for accessing th…

Out of Control
This paper plots the recent changes in the uses of public space in Hanoi, Vietnam. It is argued that the economic and social changes in contemporary Vietnam have paved the way for a dramatic transformation in the ways in which streets, pavements and markets are experienced and imagined by the populace. The efflorescence of individual mobility, street-trading and public crowding around certain popular events has led to the emergence of a distinct …
Public Spaces/Public Disgraces
This article argues that a semantic shift in the crowd in Vietnam over the last decade has allowed public space to become a site through which transgressive ideologies and desires may have an outlet. At a time of accelerating social change, the state has effectively delimited public criticism yet a fragile but assertive form of Vietnamese democratic practice has arisen in public space, at the margins of official society, in sites previously equat…
Getting Debt Relief Right
Today 41 of the world's poorest are bankrupt. These nations, identified by the World Bank as heavily indebted poor countries (hipcs), owe some $170 billion to foreign creditors, while half of their 600 million citizens get by on less than $1 a day. Nine often hipcs cannot sustain their debts, given their low export earnings and GNPs. Unless some of this debt is forgiven, they will be paying in perpetuity. Their creditors, on the other hand, inclu…
Dislocations of desire
Gifts have intrigued and challenged scholars ever since interest in the subject was piqued by Marcel Mauss who, in 1925, wrote the book The gift: The form and reason for exchange in archaic societies. Although ethnographic studies of giftgiving have been mostly confined to small-scale communities, scholars have more recently turned their attention to industrial societies, with studies of Christmas giving, Japanese gift-giving, etc. Now, as studie…
Estranged Bodies and Vietnamese Identities
In this paper I will explore both the regulation of migrant bodies as well as the lived experience of migrant embodiment in order to develop an analysis of the body as a vortex of meaning in the displacement process. By examining the way in which the bodies of Vietnamese migrants are simultaneously object and agent, I will indicate how the relations between migrants and the wider society are felt and sensed through the bodily experiences of Vietn…
Crossing over
This paper deals with the question—what are the effects of displacement on the perceptions diasporic Vietnamese have of their homeland, and of themselves? Identity has become an issue partly because there has frequently been an assumption that identity is somehow seamless, stable and unchanging. Migration highlights the relational and intersubjective nature of identity (see Bhabha, 1990; Hall, 1990). The homeland itself is also a site of constant…
