  • Textualization of Incantations in the Kalevala: A Case Study

    Tuukka Karlsson•ARTICLE•Journal of Finnish Studies•2026

This article presents an empirical analysis of Elias Lönnrot's textualization of the “Polvenhaava” (Knee Wound) poem, poem 9 of the 1849 Kalevala. The case study aims to show how Lönnrot strove to achieve an ethnographic aim, portraying the perceived bygone times of the Finnish people as faithfully as possible. The case study compares poem 9 with a poem Lönnrot collected in Viena Karelia in 1828. The analysis demonstrates Lönnrot's use of dialogi…

  • Identification of Unnamed Non-human Agents in Kalevala-metric Incantations

    Tuukka Karlsson•ARTICLE•Incantatio An International…•2023

Kalevala-metric poetry is an oral-poetic system of various genres, shared by multiple Finnic groups. In addition to epic and lyric, one of the prominent main genres of the oral tradition is formed by incantations. The Kalevala-metric incantations regularly invoke non-human agents, which are aligned with the performer in various ways. While these agents are often explicitly named and addressed, in some cases their identity remains unclear. By cond…

    Open Access•Tuukka Karlsson•ARTICLE•Elore•2022

  • The Connection of Viena Karelian Ritual Specialists to Communicative and Origin Incantations

    Open Access•Tuukka Karlsson•ARTICLE•Folklore•2022•References: 7

Researchers in the field of Kalevala-metric poetry have regularly connected types of incantations called communicative and origin incantations with Finno-Karelian ritual specialists known as the tietäjät. Although there is nothing inherently wrong with this view, the assumption has never been empirically tested. This article reports a methodological experiment aimed at investigating the connection between ritual specialists and the two incantatio…

  • Discursive Registers in Finno-Karelian Communicative Incantations

    Open Access•Tuukka Karlsson•ARTICLE•Signs and Society•2021•References: 6

The present paper investigates discursive justification as a moderative device in Kalevala-metric incantations. It explores different uses of justification by Finno-Karelian ritual specialists and argues that justification functions differently with positively and negatively evaluated non-human agents. In addition, a typology of discursive units of justification is provided. The results of the analysis reveal that justification functions as a reg…

  • Register features in Kalevala-metric incantations

    Open Access•Tuukka Karlsson•ARTICLE•Language & Communication•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Genres and registers of Kalevala-metric poetry have customarily been treated as correlating concepts. The paper examines a category of Kalevala-metric Origin of Fire incantations as a text-type which includes multiple linguistic registers functioning inside the genre. These registers are reflexive formations, potentially established as social situations when addressing supernatural agents. The analysis of directive utterances in the data reveals …
