Ecofeminist grand narratives? Cohabitability with more-than-human worlds
Small-scale narratives, whether scientific, literary or artistic, are the vehicle for much, if not most, of our contemporary philosophical reflection on climate change. Such stories are essential in allowing us to think through, and within, our circumstances. Yet they often struggle to articulate, let alone to answer, the bigger questions at stake: how to redraw our ontological maps to make the world more habitable for humans and nonhumans alike?…
Introduction
In recent years, affective concerns have become increasingly central to debates in the environmental humanities. Adding to this conversation, this essay introduces the present symposium by developing the notion of sensorial tactics. With this concept, we’re referring to a deliberate organization of perceptual and affective responses that work in various ways to tackle current socioecological disasters. Engaging each contribution, the essay outlin…
Pieśń bez słów”. Starania władz Wilna o budowę kanalizacji w latach 1903–1928
In the nineteenth century, Vilnius experienced intensive demographic and spatial development. Between 1796 and 1909, its population increased by more than 1,100 per cent, while the administrative area expanded about 4–5 times. Unfortunately, in spite of urbanisation, the city lagged behind in terms of sanitation. It was not until 1903 that a decision was taken to build a sewage system and waterworks. The plans were prepared by Edward Szymański an…

Animals Give Us a Body We Didn’t Have
The Janus Face of Cosmopolitics in advance
Scholars in multispecies ethnography, the ontological turn, new materialisms, science and technology studies (STS), assemblage urbanism, and other movements within the posthumanities broadly considered often treat cosmopolitics, initially proposed by Isabelle Stengers and subsequently taken up by Bruno Latour, as a single coherent concept. However, Stengers’s cosmopolitics differs considerably from Latour’s. The difference is most clearly visible…
Coarticulation
Representation" and "articulation" are important terms in discussions of multispecies relations. In this article, I propose the term "coarticulation" that describes a process of mutual intelligibility between a human and a nonhuman and of rendering each other capable in new ways. This article argues that the concept of "coarticulation" offers a way to enrich our understanding of our human-nonhuman relations and give ontological consistency to var…
An Interview with Vinciane Despret
In this interview, Vinciane Despret discusses the importance of Bruno Latour to her work. In particular, she addresses the questions of methodology. She examines why it is necessary to invent a new method for each new object we study and how we can become more attentive as scientists, especially those specialising in ethology, to the ways in which humans and non-humans are interested in each other. Finally, Despret considers how we can inherit fr…
Processes of translation
This article offers an in-depth analysis of the concept of translation in Bruno Latour’s oeuvre – an ambiguous and constantly morphing term. It considers the various conceptual reformulations of translation throughout his writing, concentrating on its fundamental importance for the operation of his modes of existence. A special emphasis is put on the influence of A. J. Greimas’s semiotics on Latour’s theoretical framework. The aim here is to trac…
Reinventing the Diplomat
Recent debates within broadly considered posthumanities have been populated by various conceptual personae. One such figure is the diplomat. First proposed in this context by Isabelle Stengers in her Cosmopolitics series, the diplomat has been subsequently taken up and further developed by Bruno Latour, particularly in his AIME project, and most recently by Baptiste Morizot in Les Diplomates. This article traces the metamorphosis of this conceptu…
Cholera a Covid-19. Różne choroby, wspólna profilaktyka
Cholera and COVID-19. Different diseases, common prevention measures Cholera and COVID-10 are two different diseases that have spread across the globe from Asia. The former is caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, while the second is caused by a virus belonging to the corona virus group. Despite the differences in their course and treatment, one can find similarities in epidemic prevention measures imposed in the XIXth century and currently. Ac…
Epidemie i pandemie przez wieki
The Register of the Dead from Cholera in Vilnius Pohulanka Hospital in 1831 as a Source for Demographic and Social Studies
During the first cholera epidemic in Vilnius in 1831, a hospital for cholera patients was set up in the Pohulanka district. Over a thousand patients were treated there, of whom approximately half died. Although it was intended for the Roman Catholic population, people of various faiths were admitted. The article is an attempt at a demographic and social analysis of those who died during the epidemic, with the source for the research the register …
Who Can Speak? Rancière, Latour and the Question of Articulation
In recent years, scholars in broadly considered posthumanities have attempted to reconceptualize politics in order to better account for the role of nonhuman entities in political processes. In this context, the article instantiates a dialogue between Jacques Rancière and Bruno Latour on one of the fundamental questions of politics, that is, the question of logos. Even though Latour and Rancière differ considerably in their theoretical and politi…

Hegel on a Carrousel
The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it aims to confront Hegel's ideas on the interaction between universality, particularity and singularity with those of Butler and to show that Butler's universal is dynamic and infinitely self-renewing. Second, it aims to engage with Butler's politics of translation and to demonstrate how a Levinasian perspective on Hegelian dialectics changes the functioning of the universal. In relation to this cla…
