  • C4.3 - Optimized Grasp Planning for Bin-Picking Robots with 2D and 3D Sensor Data

Robert Haas, Nikolai Hangst et al.•ARTICLE•Lectures•2025

Bin-picking systems face challenges in fully emptying containers due to Collision risks in real-world scenarios. In this contribution, we present a grasp planning approach that combines 2D and 3D sensor data to ensure collision-free handling. The method is successfully tested on objects with eccentric centers of mass and is implemented directly on the robot’s control unit, eliminating the need for separate computing hardware

  • Maligned for mathematics: Sir Thomas Urquhart and his Trissotetras

    Robert Haas•ARTICLE•Annals of Science•2019

Thomas Urquhart (1611-1660), celebrated for his English translation of Rabelais' Gargantua et Pantagruel , has earned some notoriety for his eccentric, putatively incomprehensible early book on trigonometry The Trissotetras (1645). The Trissotetras was too impractical to succeed in its own day as a textbook, since it lacked both trigonometric tables and sample calculations. But its current bad reputation is based on literary authors' amplificatio…

  • Shirley Jackson’s “The Tooth”: Dentistry as Horror, the Imagination as a Shield

    Robert Haas•ARTICLE•Literature and medicine•2015

On her way to a dreaded dental appointment to have an aching tooth pulled, Clara Spencer meets a solicitous stranger, Jim, and by the end of the story runs off with him, in many interpretations to perdition. But since 1) Shirley Jackson (who herself had much dental work and hated it) has suffered from typecasting as a horror writer, 2) dental gas anesthesia protocols of the time as Clara is anticipating could lead to sexual hallucinations, and 3)…

    Robert Haas•ARTICLE•ANQ A Quarterly Journal of Short…•2014

  • Homer on the Range

    Robert Haas•ARTICLE•The Classical World•2011

This article discusses Harry Brown’s The Stars in Their Courses , a well-crafted novel that recasts Homer’s Iliad in the form of a Western. (For instance, the book’s climax is a gunfight between Arch Eastmere [= Achilles] and Hallock [= Hector].) The novel can be a useful supplement in teaching, not only because of its dozens of plot and character parallels to Homer (tabulated in the article), but also because of its attractive “multimedia” featu…

  • Might Zora Neale Hurston's Janie Woods Be Dying of Rabies? Considerations from Historical Medicine

    Robert Haas•ARTICLE•Literature and medicine•2000

Janie's mad dying husband Tea Cake bites her, an event their doctor warned could also infect her. We think the risk to be negligible, but I argue that in the ignorance and dread of the 1930s the threat was meant seriously. It is also consistent with the ambiguity and Trickster character in African folktales influencing Hurston. Janie's story thus becomes her testament; perhaps her courage also speaks to those suffering chronic illness today

This development represented the sum of intense building activities which had lasted without interruption for over three-quarters of a century. The military railways built in France by the Am…
