  • Buying Brass, Scrapping Iron

    André Fischer•ARTICLE•Seminar A Journal of Germanic…•2025

This article investigates Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1972 television series Acht Stunden sind kein Tag and its relationship to the bourgeois genre of the “family series” through the theoretical lens of Bertolt Brecht’s Messingkauf. Rather than tracing the general influence that Brecht had on Fassbinder, the author argues that the central metaphor of the brass purchase, which Brecht used to illustrate the appropriation and repurposing of artistic …

  • Polytheism as Political Form

    André Fischer•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2023

This article revisits the intersection of myth and political theology through readings of relevant texts by Carl Schmitt, Ernst Cassirer, and Hans Blumenberg. At stake is the question of whether myth can inform a concept of political polytheism that avoids the absolutist threat to democracy of Schmitt’s monotheistic brand of political theology. To answer this question, the present essay proceeds in three steps. It reconstructs the Schmittian mode…

  • Mythos and Pathos

    André Fischer•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2022

The figure of Herakles is one of the guiding images of resistance in Peter Weiss’s Die Ästhetik des Widerstands. Rather than embodying ideological concepts or utopian perspectives of resistance, Herakles is presented as a social myth that, echoing the ideas of Georges Sorel, should inspire resistance against Nazism through the pathos of struggle and defeat. By highlighting the pathos of Herakles, Weiss re-envisions this ambiguous myth in the cont…

  • Es geht um den Antirealismus

    André Fischer•ARTICLE•Monatshefte•2021

As a contribution to recent debates about the concept of realism, this essay reconstructs Alexander Kluge’s understanding of realism as theory and analyzes it as poetic practice. Although Kluge’s concept of anti-realism is mainly understood in the theoretical context of Lukács, Brecht, and Adorno, this essay demonstrates how Kluge’s concept marks an independent position that eludes expectations of social mimesis as well as constructivist demands.…

Poetic in style and visionary in ambition, works like The Total Mobilization (1930) and The Worker (1932) resist however the methodological and systematic expectations of academic philosophy and attempt to “see” the mechanisms behind the world of appearances. In the crisis of modern subjec…
