  • Comparing local electoral turnout in Great Britain and France: More similarities than differences

    Open Access•Vincent Hoffmann‐martinot, Colin Rallings et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•1996•Cited by: 15•References: 16

Electoral and census data from Great Britain and France are used in a comparative analysis of the levels and determinants of local election turnout in the two countries. First, nine simple propositions about variations in turnout are tested using as similar as possible variables for each country. These variables are then used as the bases for multi‐variate regression analyses. The residual cases in each country are compared in order to explore th…

Relaunching Metropolitan Government in Europe : the Stuttgart Prototype The Act of 7 February 1994 on "the reinforcement of cooperation in the Stuttgart region" has established a new institution for the management of local affairs : the "regional Stuttgart community" which groups 179 municipalities around. The originality of this institution lies as well in the historical, social, economic and political conditions of the town as in its structures…

    Vincent Hoffmann-Martinot, Vincent Hoffmann‐martinot•ARTICLE•Revue française de science…•1992•Cited by: 3

Municipal election turnout in French cities An interpretive model of territorial variations in turnout applied to the 1983 municipal election in all French cities of more than 20,000 inhabitants makes it possible to test the validity of six central hypotheses. Based on ecological data, this multi-varied analysis contributes to drawing the profile of the most and the least voting cities, taking into account their social and political characteristi…

  • Grime and Verts: Two faces of European ecologism

    Vincent Hoffmann‐martinot•ARTICLE•West European Politics•1991•Cited by: 9•References: 10

Using recent Eurobarometer data, this article aims to verify, through an analysis of voters characteristics and attitudes the hypothesis of a socio‐historical differentiation of European Ecologism in two poles: the New Left radicalism of the German Grüne, and the more pragmatic way of the newly more visible French Verts. Such a Janus’ Head of some the most prominent actors of New Politics largely reflects specific constraints of their respective …

In 1983 we organized a conference on "Questioning the Welfare State and the Rise of the City" at the University of Paris, Nanterre. About a hundred persons attended, including many French social scientists and political activists. Significant support came from the new French Socialist government. Yet with Socialism in power since 1981, it was clear that the old Socialist ideas were being questioned inside and outside the Party and government-espe…
