Russian Music since 1917
Notwithstanding its title, this book is less about Music than about Musical Life: exclusively classical musical life at that, and not confined to Russia, since it regularly touches on republics formerly within the Soviet Union. There is also a particular focus on musicological traditions, both East and West. The need for a shorthand title is obvious, and the result is a valuable and up-to-date survey. Still, anyone hoping for illumination of actu…

Georges Catoire
On 13 May 1924, Georges Catoire’s Violin Sonata No. 2 was played by Dmitry Tsïganov and Samuil Feynberg as part of the inaugural concert of the Association for Contemporary Music (ACM) in Moscow. Anyone who knows anything about Soviet music will recognize the status attaching to those performers and that event, and the only surprise might be that a composer as conservative and apparently insignificant as Catoire should have been among those featu…
Composing the Modern Subject
Shostakovich’s fifteen string quartets present commentators with several paradoxes, each with its own invitingly easy explanation. Their status in the concert hall as representatives of the genre in the twentieth century has long since overtaken that of Bartók’s six quartets, but this prominence is scarcely reflected in the literature (presumably the fault of lazy musicologists). They deploy a musical language sometimes pigeonholed as ‘moderated …
Variations on the Theme
Volumes of Russian-language memoirs, diaries, and letters by and about composers in the former Soviet Union continue to pour forth, at a rate that even the most assiduous reader would find hard to digest, adding to the huge quantity of material that in an ideal world would constitute essential Source Readings. It would take a small army of translators to rectify this situation, and no one has done more single-handedly to help the cause than trans…

Erinnerungen an Alexander Skrjabin
The history of music in the early Soviet era is studded with the name of Leonid Leonidovich Sabaneyev. He was a prolific theorist and critic, founder member of the Association for Contemporary Music and co-editor of the journal Contemporary Music, and founder and staff member of the short-lived State Institute for Musical Science, to name only the most prominent of his activities. He proselytized for the unfashionable notion (by Soviet lights) of…

Berg's Sketches for Wozzeck
In 1975 the Wozzeck sketches were examined and commented on by Ernst Hilmar, having been made available to him by the composer's widow. Subsequently they were catalogued, along with all the manuscripts in the Berg legacy, by Rosemary Hilmar. It might appear surprising, then, that neither George Perle nor Janet Schmalfeldt makes more than passing mention of them in their important recent studies. In a sense the omission is not unduly sinful – not …
