Maturity, Marriage, Motherhood, Mortality is a study of women’s life-cycle rituals in ancient Israel, beginning with rituals that marked a girl child’s birth and then considering a young woman’s coming of age and her betrothal and wedding, as well as rituals undertaken by women during pregnancy and during the days and early years after giving birth, before concluding with a discussion of rituals enacted upon a woman’s death. Ritually Marking a Woman’s Death
This chapter considers both funerary rituals enacted at the time of an individual’s demise and ongoing mortuary practices performed periodically on the deceased’s behalf. Regarding funerary rituals, data from biblical texts and archaeological evidence from the Southern Kingdom of Judah concerning burials in multigenerational family tombs indicate that women were typically interred alongside men in these communal tombs, yet they also suggest that …

Efficacy of the North American Guidelines for Children’s Agricultural Tasks in Reducing Childhood Agricultural Injuries
Objectives. We assessed whether active dissemination of the North American Guidelines for Children’s Agricultural Tasks (NAGCAT) reduced childhood agricultural injuries. Methods. In this randomized controlled trial, lay educators visited intervention farms to review NAGCAT. New York State farms with resident or working children were randomized. Control farms were visited only to collect baseline data. Data on childhood injuries, tasks, and hours …
