Viewing Our past through a Culinary Prism
What we eat defines us as a culture. From matso to tortillas, the relationship between culture and cuisine is evident. When we view our past through a culinary prism, we discover that our forebears were not very different from ourselves and we begin to see more of ourselves in the artifacts that were left behind by these distant relatives. Is it any surprise then that archaeology suggests that many of the technological advances made by our early …

The Aegean Pottery at Megiddo: An Appraisal and Reanalysis
Approximately 87 whole or fragmentary Aegean vessels were found at the site of Megiddo (biblical Armageddon) during the excavations undertaken by the University of Chicago between 1925 and 1939. Virtually all of these imports are of Late Helladic IIIA or IIIB (14th-12th centuries B. C.) manufacture. Together they form an important corpus of imported material that is systematically studied and presented here for the first time as a unit. Computer-…

A Chalcolithic "Fine Ware" from Kataret Es-Samra in the Jordan Valley
Recent excavations at Kataret es-Samra in the eastern Jordan Valley have produced sherds of a distinctive, polychromatic pottery that appear to date to the end of the fourth millennium B. C., i. e., the interface between the Chalcolithic period and the Early Bronze/Proto-Urban Age. Such decorative pottery is exceptional at this time in the Jordan Valley and finds its closest parallels in Phases D and E of the Syrian Amuq Plain and other cultures …

The Naukratis Project concerns work in the Western Nile Delta, in an area bounded by El-Barnugi in the north and Kom el-Hisn in the south. This area contains the ancient city of Naukratis (Kom Ge'if), which, according to Herodotos, was the first and only city in which the early Greek merchants were allowed to settle, as well as other sites with reported histories of occupation from Pharaonic through late Roman times. Unfortunately, little is know…
