Reconfiguring the Spaces of the “Creative Class” in Contemporary Berlin
The impact of gentrification has been particularly tangible in Berlin since the turn of the century.Elsewhere in this volume, Schuster-Craig investigates how these tensions manifest themselves in terms of the 'integration' debate in the specific district of Neu-Klln, and how cultural production has sought to address these.Linking to the contribution of Sark on the cultural history of post-Wall Berlin in this volume, but focusing on the conditions…
Care leavers on social work courses
Care leavers constitute a small but important minority of social work students. Their dual role as previous ‘consumers’ of care and students is of inherent interest to both those involved in social work education and providers of social work services. This paper discusses a small research project that explored the experiences of such students through semi‐structured interviews. One theme that reoccurred in the analyses of the interview transcript…
Encountering Lateness in Postunification Berlin
Berlin's material past remains obstinately visible despite the predictions of urban theorists about the "overexposed" city. What is "remembering well" in contemporary Berlin: the preservation of a particular form of the city (Berlin's Planwerk Innenstadt) or the remembering of one particular past (e.g., National Socialism or the German Democratic Republic), or can it be understood in terms of a relationship to past time as such? This article argu…

Obsolescence and the Cityscape of the Former GDR
Paul Ricoeur claims that it is on the scale of urbanism that we best catch sight of the work of time in space. This article establishes two paradigmatic ways of seeing time in the city, the synchronic urban gaze and the urban memorial gaze, in order to explore how visualisations of the cityscape of the former GDR negotiate the significance of obsolescence, both ideological and physical. These paradigmatic forms can be associated with the ‘officia…

Just teach us the skills please, we'll do the rest’
This paper discusses the outcomes of an initiative to empower ten‐year‐olds as active researchers. It debates some of the barriers that are commonly cited with regard to children of this age taking ownership of their own research agendas—power relations, competence, knowledge and skills—and challenges the status quo. It describes a study in which a group of ten‐year‐olds participated in a taught programme aimed at equipping them with the knowledg…
Barriers to Adoption
Political and media interest in adoption in the last few years in Britain coincided with a research project set up jointly by the North-West Group of Voluntary Adoption Agencies and Liverpool John Moores University. The origins of the research lie in the concerns of the voluntary adoption agencies about the use of their services by local authorities in the light of their own records, which indicated very variable patterns of use. The aim of the r…
Online Participation and Mobilisation in Britain
This article examines the effects of the Internet on political participation in Britain. In particular it examines the 'normalisation' thesis which argues that the Internet will produce relatively few attitudinal or behavioural changes in the mass public, but rather will tend to reinforce and reflect existing patterns of participation. The evidence suggests that given the hype surrounding the emergence of the Internet, its subsequent impact in th…

Wolfgang Koeppen and the Bridge of Memory
In this paper I examine the importance of memory and the image of the bridge in Wolfgang Koeppen’s later texts. As I show through detailed analysis of these works, the bridge principally denotes the temporary resolution of the paradox of past and present selves through the act of writing, but also suggests that the search for an identity with the past means an inability to exist productively in the present. I understand the bridge as a liminal sp…
Human influences on breeding of south polar skuas in the eastern Larsemann Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica
Breeding activity of pairs of south polar skuas ( Catharacta maccormicki ) in the eastern Larsemann Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, was recorded in five of six austral summers between 1988 and 1994. More detailed observations of breeding success were made in the 1989/90 and 1993/94 summers. Although relatively few skuas nest in the study area, data suggest that there was inter-annual variation in numbers and locations of territor…
