    Andrew Cole, Andrew W Cole•ARTICLE•Communication Quarterly•2026

  • The prospective relationship between uptake of earned income tax credit (Eitc), financial strain, and health in socio-economically strained families of Arab-American descent

Open Access•Bengt B Arnetz, Alesia Grinstead et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

The federal government offers Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to working low and middle-income families. Lack of knowledge and distrust in government results in a large proportion of qualified families not claiming EITC. This is especially true for minority groups, including immigrants. The study objectives were: (1) to examine whether a community derived EITC outreach campaign targeting EITC eligible residents of Arab-American descent in Southea…

  • The Dialectic of Space

    Andrew Cole•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The spatial dialectic is an important familiar phrase in critical writing, but it nonetheless needs continued elaboration and more working out as a concept. This essay proposes some fundamentals for thinking a dialectic that is unrelentingly spatial and unapologetically material. It first seeks to spatialize temporal logics like contradiction through the Hegelian concept of "material contradiction," which is outside of time, language, and conscio…

Published evidence for the role of participatory art in supporting health and well-being is growing. The Arts on Prescription model is one vehicle by which participatory art can be delivered. Much of the focus of Arts on Prescription has been on the provision of creative activities for people with mental health needs. This Arts on Prescription program, however, targeted community-dwelling older people with a wide range of health and wellness need…

  • Can specially trained community care workers effectively support patients and their families in the home setting at the end of life

Open Access•Roslyn G Poulos, Damian Harkin et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2017•Cited by: 1

Surveys indicate that many Australians would prefer to die at home, but relatively few do. Recognising that patients and their families may not have the support they need to enable end-of-life care at home, a consortium of care providers developed, and received funding to trial, the Palliative Care Home Support Program (PCHSP) across seven health districts in New South Wales, Australia. The programme aimed to supplement end-of-life care in the ho…

  • How to Think a Figure; or, Hegel's Circles

    Andrew Cole•ARTICLE•Representations•2017

This essay suggests that Hegel's philosophy of the concept is also a philosophy of the figure, a demonstration of conceptuality by other means. Neither images nor symbols, Hegel's figures-primarily, circles-initiate and image the movement of thought

Recent philosophical tendencies of "Actor-Network Theory," "Object-Oriented Ontology," and "Speculative Realism" have profoundly challenged the centrality of subjectivity in the humanities, and many artists and curators, particularly in the UK, Germany, and the United States, appear deeply influenced by this shift from epistemology to ontology. October editors asked artists, historians, and philosophers invested in these projects-from Graham Harm…

  • The Untimely Dialectic

    Andrew Cole•CHAPTER•The Birth of Theory•2014

  • On Dialectical Interpretation

    Andrew Cole•CHAPTER•The Birth of Theory•2014

This concluding chapter rewrites the history of Anglo-American criticism in its sweeping account of dialectical literary historicism—from Hegel and his contemporaries to the mid-to-late-nineteenth-century Hegelians in the UK and US, to Lukács, Macherey, and Jameson. It identifies where, over the years, dialectical criticism has preferred to think exclusively with concepts rather than figures, and shows how the inclusion of premodern dialectical m…

  • The Lord and the Bondsman

Andrew Cole, Andrew J Cole•CHAPTER•The Birth of Theory•2014

This chapter supplies a crucial reinterpretation of Hegel’s master/slave--or better, “lord/bondsman”--dialectic. Scholars from Kojève on have misrecognized the ways in which Hegel writes this episode as a fundamentally feudal narrative depicting the struggle for possession (specifically, for land) between the Herr and the Knecht. For Hegel, this episode has contemporary significance not because of any supposed reference to ancient slavery or the …

  • The Eucharist and the Commodity

    Andrew Cole•CHAPTER•The Birth of Theory•2014

Marx’s theory of the commodity fetish is not as original as it seems. In fact, it has its foundations in Hegel’s writings on religion—specifically, Hegel’s discussions of the sacramental feelings and fetishism of Christianity, from the time of Christ to the Middle Ages. Marx, this chapter demonstrates, translates the Hegelian eucharist into the commodity; more broadly, he takes from Hegel a sacramental theory of fetishism that explains, in ways n…

  • The Medieval Dialectic

    Andrew Cole•CHAPTER•The Birth of Theory•2014

  • Fürstenspiegel, Political Economy, Critique

    Andrew Cole•CHAPTER•The Birth of Theory•2014

Theorists have long used the genres of tragedy and comedy to explain--or critique--history. But there is also the genre of Fürstenspiegel, which Hegel uses to examine the historical character of the discipline of political economy—taking on its greatest practitioner, Adam Smith. Hegel’s pairing of Fürstenspiegel and political economy matters, in the first instance, because their histories are, unbeknownst to later theorists and genre specialists …
