Open Access•Y Matsumoto, Hans C Boas et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge Handbook of…•2025

Construction Grammar is one of the fastest-growing branches of functional syntax. Divided into six thematic parts, it covers the fundamental notions of Construction Grammar, its conceptual origins and the basic ideas that unite its various branches, its solid empirical grounding and affinities wi…

  • Yagara Dictionary and Salvage Grammar

Karen Sullivan, Glenda Harward-Nalder•BOOK•Yagara Dictionary and Salvage…•2024•References: 4

Most English speakers in Australia know a few words of Yagara, the Pama-Nyungan language traditionally spoken in the area that now includes Brisbane and Ipswich. For example, Australian English yakka 'work' comes from the Yagara verb yaga 'to work'. However, no fluent native speakers of Yagara remain. The current volume compares the written records of Yagara to facilitate

  • A review of brownfields revitalisation and reuse research in the US over three decades

Christopher De Sousa, Ann M M Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2023

Over the past 30 years, US-based research on contaminated and potentially-contaminated sites, or brownfields, has grown from defining the scope and size of the environmental, health and economic risks posed by abandoned manufacturing sites to exploring and documenting site-specific and area-wide impacts of their cleanup and revitalisation. From early and varied research on environmental and economic policy to equity and public impacts on minority…

  • Metonymies and Metaphors for Death Around the World

Wojciech Wachowski, Karen Sullivan•BOOK•Metonymies and Metaphors for…•2021

This book reflects on the ways in which metonymy and metaphor are used conceptually and linguistically to mitigate the more difficult dimensions of death and dying, setting out a unique line of research within Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The volume argues that metonymic and metaphoric descriptions of death and dying reflect taboos, concealment, and other considerations not found in figurative descriptions of life, producing distinct forms of euph…

  • Maternal interactive beliefs and style as predictors of language development in preterm and full term children

Open Access•Sharifeh YOUNESIAN, Areana Eivers et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2021

Previous research has shown that the quality of mother-child interactions between pre-term children and their mothers tends to be poorer than that of full-term children and their mothers (Forcada-Guex, Pierrehumbert, Borghini, Moessinger & Muller-Nix, 2006). Mothers of pre-term children are less responsive and more intrusive in interactions with their children than mothers of full-term children (Forcada-Guex et al., 2006; Ionio, Lista, Mascheroni…

  • Being -clauses in Historical Corpora and the US Second Amendment

    Karen Sullivan•ARTICLE•English Studies•2018•References: 3

The gun control debate in the US revolves around the interpretation of the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. Due to over two hundred years of language change, this Amendment is confusing and ungrammatical for modern readers. Analysts of the Amendment have taken into account the etymology of many of its words, but the present study is the first to examine the syntactic changes that have caused the Amendment’s current ungrammaticality, and t…

  • Are dead artists’ paintings more lively? – Agency in descriptions of artworks before and after an artist’s death

    Karen Sullivan, Sally Butler•ARTICLE•WORD•2017•References: 8

When artists die, their artworks skyrocket in value and prestige, because their deaths ensure no new works will be created. But is this the only reason that artworks become more valuable once their artists pass away? The current study suggests that viewers describe artworks as more agentive once the works’ artists are deceased. The study compares descriptions of a painter’s works before and after her death in 2011, and finds that clauses in the l…

  • Integrating constructional semantics and conceptual metaphor

    Karen Sullivan•ARTICLE•Constructions and Frames•2016

Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) aims to represent the conceptual structure of metaphors rather than the structure of metaphoric language. The theory does not explain which aspects of metaphoric language evoke which conceptual structures, for example. However, other theories within cognitive linguistics may be better suited to this task. These theories, once integrated, should make building a unified model of both the conceptual and linguistic as…

  • With the future coming up behind them: Evidence that Time approaches from behind in Vietnamese

    Open Access•Karen Sullivan, Linh Thuy Bui•ARTICLE•Cognitive Linguistics•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 2

Vietnamese speakers can describe the future as behind them and gesture forwards to indicate the past, which suggests they use a conceptual model of Time in which the future is behind and the past is in front. This type of model has previously been shown to be pervasive only among older speakers of Aymara in the Andes (Núñez and Sweetser 2006. With the future behind them: Convergent evidence from Aymara language and gesture in the crosslinguistic …

  • Judging a book by its cover (and its background): Effects of the metaphor intelligence is brightness on ratings of book images

    Open Access•Karen Sullivan•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2015•References: 2

Visual metaphors have been the focus of experimental and corpus studies aiming to determine whether metaphors are conceptual or purely linguistic. However, in visual metaphor research, experimental and corpus approaches have each been directed at a distinct set of visual metaphors. Psychological experiments have focused on primary metaphors, whereas corpus studies have concentrated on non-primary metaphors. The current study suggests that when no…

  • Censoring metaphors in translation: Shakespeare's Hamlet under Franco

Open Access•Karen Sullivan, Elena Bandín Fuertes et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Linguistics•2014

In the three versions of Hamlet translated during the Franco regime in Spain, metaphors related to the censored themes of sex and religion were altered or removed. In this study, we employ the Metaphor Identification Procedure (Pragglejaz Group 2007) to identify all metaphors involving sex and religion in Shakespeare's Hamlet and its three Franco-era Spanish translations. We find that under the influence of censorship, authors employ many of the …

  • If and when it’s a construction

    Karen Sullivan•ARTICLE•Constructions and Frames•2011

This construction coordinates a conditional and a temporal conjunction, as in if and when P Q ; Q until and unless P ; and a wide range of other micro-constructions. The current study documents the various types of if and when constructions, examines their relation to temporal and conditional constructions, and analyzes their variations in form …

  • The Languages of Art: How Representational and Abstract Painters Conceptualize Their Work in Terms of Language

    Karen Sullivan•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2009•References: 7

Representational and nonrepresentational (abstract) artists exhibit different conceptual processes when they describe their work. Data from ekphrastic texts written by artists to accompany their artwork show that, although both kinds of painters refer metaphorically to their art using terms such as language, vocabulary, conversation, and narrative, the two use these words in different ways and with different meanings. For example, representationa…

    Open Access•Karen Sullivan, Karen A Sullivan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

This study examined the nature of WMS-R scoring errors made by trainee psychologists and the extent to which errors influenced index scores on this scale. Trainee psychologists undertook competency based training exercises for the WMS-R, similar to those devised for the WAIS-R by Fantuzzo, Blakely, and Gorsuch in 1989. A WMS-R training protocol was devised and scored by three experienced psychologists to generate a gold standard protocol. The tra…

    Open Access•Karen Sullivan, Karen A Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1996

Australian neuropsychologists, who use tests developed in North America such as Wechsler's Memory Scales, have expressed some concerns about the relevance of test materials for Australian clients. In Australia, concern about the American content of Logical Memory prompted Ivison to recommend modifications to adapt this test for local conditions. Consequently, when Australian psychologists administer Logical Memory they may be using Wechsler's sto…
