Of Sailors and Poets
In this essay, I trace the metamorphoses of the trope of poetry as ‘message in a bottle’ in the works of Paul Celan, Durs Grünbein, and Joseph Brodsky. Beginning from a juxtaposition of Osip Mandelstam's conception of the poetic text as a ‘letter in a bottle’ with Bertolt Brecht's depiction of lyric poetry as ‘Flaschenpost’ in light of their conceptual discrepancies, I inquire into the different ways in which three of Brecht's and, above all, Man…

On Literature and Ethics
This essay deals with the complex relationship between literature and ethics. More specifically, it inquires into and problematizes the conceptual ways in which such discursive distinctions as that between literature and moral philosophy have been upheld, as well as the assumptions and presuppositions underlying the ascription to literature of an ethically exemplary role. Accepting the methodological and conceptual challenges presented by some of…

Bakhtin on Poetry
Bakhtin's endorsement of literary prose-especially Dostoevsky's-on the grounds of its polyphony and his concomitant critique of poetry on the grounds of its allegedly monologic character have become commonplace in Bakhtin criticism. In this article, I reexamine this view of the respective significance of poetry and prose in Bakhtin's oeuvre. In particular, I argue that far from being relegated to the realm of discursive and, by extension, sociopo…
