  • Introduction

    Open Access•Richard Longhurst•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2017

Development policy, practice and research have largely adhered to a North–South, geographic and aid-driven view of the world. Over the last ten years the approaches of South–South cooperation have also come to prominence. However, more attention is being paid to universal development based on the assumption that development challenges are as relevant for the North as for the South, with many common problems. More needs to be known about the natur…

  • Incorporating Seasonality into Agricultural Project Design and Learning

    Open Access•Stephen Devereux, Richard Longhurst•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2010•References: 2

Seasonality can be extremely damaging to the lives and livelihoods of rural people, but this is rarely recognised and factored into the design and implementation of agricultural projects. During the annual hungry season, farmers face empty granaries, high food prices and waterborne diseases, which compel them to adopt 'coping strategies' that perpetuate poverty ratchets. Seasonal employment programmes can smooth income and consumption but could o…

  • Evaluation

    Open Access•Henry Lucas, Henry C Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2010•References: 13

The overall objective of this article is to discuss current theoretical debates in the evaluation literature to assess their relevance for agriculture. After noting the 'bad press' of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) in agriculture, the literature is selectively reviewed to see what light is shed from different evaluation paradigms and methodologies. Experiences in the health sector are then examined in greater depth, emphasising debates around ra…

    Open Access•Richard Longhurst, Samura Kamara et al.•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•1988•Cited by: 4•References: 2

The major elements of a structural adjustment package in Sierra Leone comprised flotation of the leone in June 1986 and removal of subsidies on rice and petrol. By April 1987 the leone had depreciated by 90 per cent (from Le6 = $1 to Le50 = $1), and the price of a cup of rice had increased 21⁄2?3 times. The monthly cost of severely reduced meals for a family of five was about Le1000, which should be compared with a minimum government wage of Le25…

  • Cash Crops, Household Food Security and Nutrition

    Open Access•Richard Longhurst•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•1988•Cited by: 7•References: 8

This article examines two main questions: what does the available evidence reveal about the impact on household food security and nutrition of a shift from semi-subsistance to cash cropping? Does this evidence, used together with present analytical frameworks, allow us to develop any predictive ability or typologies as to the impact on food consumption and nutrition of specific types of crops in different policy situations

  • Trees, Seasons and the Poor

    Open Access•Robert Chambers, Richard Longhurst•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Trees play a significant role in poor people's seasonal livelihoods: this has been a neglected subject due to interlocking biases against understanding how the poor secure their incomes, and ignorance of the multipurpose role of trees. Trees play an important seasonal role through their physical characteristics: deep rooting with access to moisture and nutrients year round. Accumulation of stocks in the form of wood and various beneficial environ…

  • Seasonality and Poverty

    Open Access•Richard Longhurst, Robert Chambers et al.•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 1

There is great diversity in the way different groups of people are affected by seasonality and cope with it. Greater understanding of this diversity is required if policy and project interventions are to strengthen the position of poor rural people. The damaging periods of time can sometimes be very short, regularly crippling families in their efforts to accumulate resources and protect their health. In sub?Saharan Africa seasonality is clearly a…

  • Household Food Strategies in Response to Seasonality and Famine

    Open Access•Richard Longhurst•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•1986•Cited by: 10•References: 10

Poor rural families plan for food shortages both seasonally and for unexpected inter-seasonal events. This rather obvious fact of life is not often incorporated into planning of agricultural development activities. Comparatively little is known about the insurance mechanisms which families employ to ensure their household food security: their nature and resilience and how far different types of families use different mechanisms, and how rural dev…
