Disadvantaged Women and Vulnerable Men: Gender Differences in Workplace Discrimination
Distinct cascades for secure and insecure infants from early anger dysregulation to mothers' and fathers' power‐assertive control at toddler age to externalizing outcomes at preschool age: A replicati…
BACKGROUND: Bowlby's concept of attachment as a biobehavioral proximity-regulating system providing infants with confidence in protection and support for exploration has been expanded to include early security's legacy for socialization processes. We report a continued programmatic effort to replicate our model of security as a potent catalyst moderating common maladaptive longitudinal cascades from early child difficulty to increased parental po…
Research on Values and Dual-Process Theory: Application of Implicit Cognitive Measures
Mothers’ Willingness to Sacrifice for Their Children: An Exploratory Approach
Intensive mothering ideology emphasizes mothers’ sacrifice for their children. Despite the increase in women’s social and economic participation, mothers continue to experience conflicts between career and family obligations due to the conventional idea of “good mothers.” Do all mothers prioritize their children’s needs? This study focuses on whether mothers are willing to sacrifice their happiness and whether such beliefs change over time. We ex…
Correlates of Contemporary Gender Preference for Children in South Korea
This study explores gender preference for children in South Korea, where a strong, traditional son preference has recently shifted to a greater preference for daughters or no preference. Using data from the 2008 Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC; N = 1,836) and 2012 Korean General Social Survey (KGSS; N = 1,355), we examined social and attitudinal correlates of child gender preference, including kinship patterns, perceived prospects for the fu…
Children’s early difficulty and agreeableness in adolescence: Testing a developmental model of interplay of parent and child effects
Although the trait of Agreeableness is broadly considered a key facet of adjustment, mental health, and socioemotional competence, surprisingly little is known about its developmental origins. Laursen and Richmond (2014) proposed that children's early difficulty poses a challenge for their future social relationships, ultimately leading to low Agreeableness. Drawing from that model, we examined a path to Agreeableness in adolescence, originating …
Evidence for childhood origins of conscientiousness: Testing a developmental path from toddler age to adolescence
We tested empirically a theoretical model of early origins of conscientiousness proposed by Eisenberg, Duckworth, Spinrad, and Valiente (2014). The model posited a developmental interplay between children's early effortful control (EC) and internalized or committed compliance with parents as leading to future conscientiousness. We followed a community sample of 102 community mothers, fathers, and children from toddlerhood to adolescence. Observer…
Long-term sequelae of mothers’ and fathers’ mind-mindedness in infancy: A developmental path to children’s attachment at age 10
Rapidly growing research on parental mind-mindedness, a tendency to treat one's young child as a psychological agent and an individual with a mind, internal mental states, and emotions, has demonstrated significant links among parents' mind-mindedness, their parenting, and multiple aspects of children's development. This prospective longitudinal study of 102 community mothers, fathers, and infants, followed from 7 months to 10 years, contributes …
Relational antecedents and social implications of the emotion of empathy: Evidence from three studies
Despite emotion researchers' strong interest in empathy and its implications for prosocial functioning, surprisingly few studies have examined parent-child attachment as a context for early origins of empathy in young children. Consequently, empirical evidence on links among children's attachment, empathy, and prosociality is thin and inconsistent. We examined such links in 2 longitudinal studies of community families (Family Study, N = 101 mothe…
A complex interplay among the parent–child relationship, effortful control, and internalized, rule-compatible conduct in young children: Evidence from two studies
We propose a model linking the early parent-child mutually responsive orientation (MRO), children's temperament trait of effortful control, and their internalization of conduct rules. In a developmental chain, effortful control was posited as a mediator of the links between MRO and children's internalization. MRO was further posited as a moderator of the links between effortful control and internalization (i.e., moderated mediation): Variations i…
Challenging circumstances moderate the links between mothers' personality traits and their parenting in low-income families with young children
The need for research on potential moderators of personality-parenting links has been repeatedly emphasized, yet few studies have examined how varying stressful or challenging circumstances may influence such links. We studied 186 diverse, low-income mother-toddler dyads. Mothers described themselves in terms of Big Five traits, were observed in lengthy interactions with their children, and provided parenting reports. Ecological adversity, assess…
Children's conscience during toddler and preschool years, moral self, and a competent, adaptive developmental trajectory
We investigated whether children's robust conscience, formed during early family socialization, promotes their future adaptive and competent functioning in expanded ecologies. We assessed two dimensions of conscience in young children (N = 100) at 25, 38, and 52 months in scripted laboratory contexts: internalization of their mothers' and fathers' rules, observed when the child was alone, and empathic concern toward each parent, observed in simul…
