Retirement decisions in the age of Covid-19 pandemic
Evaluating synthetic population approaches for Italian municipal-level microdata
The Biased Reaction to Changes in Family-Related Public Expenditure
This study examines the relationship between fertility and social policies across countries within the European Union. Using European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) data from 2005 to 2020, the research investigates how increases and reductions in family allowances are connected to the likelihood of subsequent births in the short term. Based on the social investment hypothesis and a general expansion of family policies …
Does Working from Home Increase the Gender Wage Gap? Insights from an Italian Survey of Occupations
This article investigates to what extent the working from home (WFH) feasibility of occupations can influence the gender wag gap (GWG) at the mean and along the wage distribution. Based on Oaxaca-Blinder decompositions and unconditional quantile regressions, results show that the GWG is greater among women working in an occupation with a high level of WFH feasibility. We find evidence of both sticky floor and glass ceiling effects for employees w…
The large family penalty in Italy
This paper argues that public policies, including minimum income schemes (MIS), should devote specific attention to large families, in terms of both benefits' generosity and targeting, to avoid unfair penalizations. Adopting a child‐centered approach to the definition of family size, and using a unique administrative‐survey linked database, this study provides two main contributions for the Italian case. First, it documents the consumption‐based …
I Would Like to but I Cannot
Over the last two decades, involuntary part-time (IPT) employment has become a more and more pressing issue in Europe, especially in the southern countries, where IPT today constitutes most part-time employment. Using INAPP-PLUS data and different discrete choice model estimations, this paper aims to shed light on the factors that explain the IPT growth in Italy, focusing on what influences the IPT status at the individual, household and labour m…
SOS incomes
Using a static microsimulation model based on a link between survey and administrative data, this article investigates the effects of the pandemic on income distribution in Italy in 2020. The analysis focuses on both individuals and households by simulating through nowcasting techniques changes in labour income and in equivalized income, respectively. For both units of observations, we compare changes before and after social policy interventions,…

Like a stone thrown into a pond – poverty contrast of an emporium of solidarity
Purpose This paper highlights to what extent an emporium of solidarity may affect poverty conditions of its recipients, and whether it generates net social benefits to different actors involved. Design/methodology/approach To evaluate the effect of an emporium of solidarity project on poverty conditions of its recipients, we run Probit estimation models. As for the efficiency evaluation, we develop instead a social cost–benefit framework which co…
Identification of a New Heavy-Metal-Resistant Strain of Geobacillus stearothermophilus Isolated from a Hydrothermally Active Volcanic Area in Southern Italy
Microorganisms thriving in hot springs and hydrothermally active volcanic areas are dynamically involved in heavy-metal biogeochemical cycles; they have developed peculiar resistance systems to cope with such metals which nowadays can be considered among the most permanent and toxic pollutants for humans and the environment. For this reason, their exploitation is functional to unravel mechanisms of toxic-metal detoxification and to address biorem…

Virtual Restoration of Fragmented Glass Plate Photographs of Archaeological Repertoires
This paper describes a virtual restoration pipeline for the broken glass plates in the fund of the Department of Archaeological, Philological and Historical Studies of Catania University. This archive includes rare images of the excavation activities of the Department in Sicily and Greece. Several of the plates are damaged and fractured and require virtual realignment and restoration. We adapted to this case a restoration algorithm based on the u…
‘Coming back home’ . Il modello virtuale della statua romana di Asclepio del Museo di Siracusa (Italia)
The colossal torso of the god Asclepius, kept into the Castello Maniace during the Spanish domination of Sicily, is now one of the most significant examples of roman statuary in the Syracuse Museum. The recent restoration of the Castello Maniace has been celebrated in 2008 with an exhibition of archaeological finds obtained in the various excavations of the castle. The statue of Asclepius, which had for centuries been a part of the architecture t…
