Mapping HDI’s Geostructures of Inequality: A Poset Analysis
This paper introduces the notion of geostructures of inequality, examining how inequality indicators are conceptualized and utilized in regional and development studies. This conceptual contribution is based on the use of partially ordered set theory (posets). The paper also offers an empirical contribution based on the use of Hasse diagrams to build regional benchmark profiles of the human development index (HDI). This paper identifies, among it…
Measuring quality and sustainability in higher education: An analysis using university rankings
Purpose This study aims to examine how national higher education systems and institutional strategies foster high-quality education and promote societal impact. By analyzing country and university outcomes in the QS World University Ranking (QSWUR) and QS Sustainability Ranking (QSS), it explores how governance, research capacity, institutional collaboration and diversity are associated with university performance in both academic excellence and …
Sustainability as Justice: Making the “Leave No One Behind” Work
This paper critically engages with the LNOB principle of the 2030 Agenda, highlighting its conceptual, methodological, and structural limitations. Building on Amartya Sen's social choice theory and Rawlsian justice, it reconceptualizes “sustainability as justice,” emphasizing real‐world comparative assessments grounded in intersectionality. It develops a novel methodological framework combining the CART algorithm and its descriptive and statistic…
Social Choice, Agency, Inclusiveness and Capabilities
The capability approach is a versatile framework rooted on issues of justice and multidimensional assessment of quality of life developed in the 1980s as an alternative approach to prevailing mainstream development ideas focused narrowly on economic development. Most closely associated with the work of Amartya Sen, it has become of great interest to development scholars from a variety of different disciplines. Much has already been done exploring…
Are AI systems biased against the poor? A machine learning analysis using Word2Vec and GloVe embeddings
Among the myriad of technical approaches and abstract guidelines proposed to the topic of AI bias, there has been an urgent call to translate the principle of fairness into the operational AI reality with the involvement of social sciences specialists to analyse the context of specific types of bias, since there is not a generalizable solution. This article offers an interdisciplinary contribution to the topic of AI and societal bias, in particul…
Valuing Children: Parents’ Perceptions, Spending Priorities and Children’s Capabilities
This paper provides a composite analysis of children’s academic development grounded on the capability approach. The study utilises a panel dataset comprising 8,422 Chinese children and adolescents aged 6 to 16, observed between 2012 and 2018. It introduces a series of innovative indicators, including a parent advantage index to capture how parents influence their children and a ranking indicator for spending priorities to reify the value of chil…
The side effects of a big push growth strategy: Export incentives and primary education under military rule in Brazil, 1967–1985
During the military regime in Brazil (1964–1985), enrollment ratios in primary education grew substantially in the first decade under dictatorship, but stagnated in the mid-1970s. This paper shows that education spending might depend on the levels of centralisation in tax matters. Using panel data regressions and qualitative evidence, we argue that a massive big push industrialisation programme increased the pressure on external accounts, leading…

Saf: Stakeholders’ Agreement on Fairness in the Practice of Machine Learning Development
This paper clarifies why bias cannot be completely mitigated in Machine Learning (ML) and proposes an end-to-end methodology to translate the ethical principle of justice and fairness into the practice of ML development as an ongoing agreement with stakeholders. The pro-ethical iterative process presented in the paper aims to challenge asymmetric power dynamics in the fairness decision making within ML design and support ML development teams to i…
Defining left behind places: An internationally comparative poset analysis
There is considerable debate in the literature as to the precise definition of ‘left-behind’ places, and the appropriate metrics for identifying them, and for successfully targeting regional policy interventions. We propose an evaluation structure for ‘left-behindness’ based on Amartya Sen’s capability approach, and argue that the diversity of criteria should not be seen as a shortcoming, but rather as a richness to be explored. We show, through …
A capability-approach perspective on regional development
We argue for a broader and more deliberative regional policy-making process that can be used to better identify the needs of diverse left-behind communities and develop appropriate policies. We argue that the capability approach’s quintessentially inclusive and broad scope, and focus on real opportunities, agency, and process might better address the challenges of regional development. We use these insights to lay out a practical guide for how th…
Disentangling aporophobia from xenophobia in the EU-15
This paper analyses whether the human capital levels embodied in immigrants can explain xenophobic trends for 126 regions in 14 EU-15 countries from 1998 to 2018. It tests if xenophobic regions may be rejecting immigrants because they are poor, a phenomenon recently defined as ‘aporophobia’. The results indicate that larger inflows of low-educated immigrants working in low-skilled occupations are significantly correlated with a higher rejection o…
Sustainability and Human Development Indicators: A Poset Analysis
The paper introduces the methodology of partially ordered sets to evaluate sustainable human development indicators. It shows its importance to the integration of human and environmental indicators, clarifying the limitations of composite indicators and emphasising the need to move towards higher levels of conceptual consistency and solid informational pluralism, incorporating richer social and environmental spaces towards an analytical structure…

A Poset-Generalizability Method for Human Development Indicators
The paper introduces a poset-generalizability perspective for analysing human development indicators. It suggests a new method for identifying admissibility of different informational spaces and criteria in human development analysis. From its inception, the Capability Approach has argued for informational pluralism in normative evaluations. But in practice, it has turned its back to other (non-capability) informational spaces for being imperfect…

Capabilities, Gender, Equality: Towards Fundamental Entitlements
Questions of gender, injustice and equality pervade all our lives, and as such, the capabilities or 'human development' approach to understanding well-being and basic political entitlements continues to be debated. In this thought-provoking book, a range of authors provide unique reflections on the capabilities approach and, specifically, Martha C. Nussbaum's contributions to issues of gender, equality and political liberalism. Moreover, the auth…

Climate Change and Well-Being
Human well-being in industrialized and developing nations continues to be influenced by disparate components and there is growing evidence that climate change is a new and potentially damaging global threat. Context affects the prospect of finding solutions because socio-economic elements, ethical considerations, and moral norms all play their part. Of central concern is how to advance from the innumerable benefits of capitalism and industrializa…
Adaptive Preferences and Capabilities: Some Preliminary Conceptual Explorations
The Capability Approach (CA) as developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, has in part been a response to the problem of adaptive preferences. Their argument says that people might adapt to certain unfavorable circumstances and any self-evaluation in terms of satisfaction or happiness will in this case necessarily be distorted. To evaluate people's well-being in terms of functionings and capabilities guarantees a more objective picture of peop…
Capabilities and Happiness: Potential Synergies
The paper compares two prominent approaches to assessing Human Well-Being, the Capability Approach and the Subjective Well-Being Approach. It investigates the differences and the similarities between these approaches. An argument is made for exploring the potential synergies between them. Finally, the papers of this special edition are briefly introduced

The Scottish Tradition in Economics and the Role of Common Sense in Adam Smith's Thought
This essay examines the notion of a 'Scottish Tradition' and the role of common sense in Adam Smith's thought. It is a contribution to the contemporary literature on the 'Scottish Approach' and on the historical investigation of Adam Smith's intellectual background. It argues that a notion of common sense was behind Smith's view of science and that it may provide an epistemological foundation for the Scottish Tradition. The essay attempts to show…

The Capability Approach: Concepts, Measures and Applications
The capability approach developed by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen has become an important new paradigm in thinking about development. However, despite its theoretical and philosophical attractiveness, it has been less easy to measure or to translate into policy. This volume addresses these issues in the context of poverty and justice. Part I offers a set of conceptual essays that debate the strength of the often misunderstood individual focus of th…
