Affective control in adolescence: The influence of age and depressive symptomatology on working memory
People exhibit marked individual variation in their ability to exercise cognitive control in affectively charged situations. Affective control is typically assessed in laboratory settings by comparing performance in carefully constructed executive tasks performed in both affectively neutral and affectively charged contexts. There is some evidence that affective control undergoes significant improvement throughout adolescence, though it is unclear…
The Principle of Alloys
Transdisciplinary artist James Gordon Williams writes about two improvised performances on former Cook County Department of Corrections, Chicago, prison bars in an ongoing collaboration with artist Maria Gaspar. Williams reflects on the bar performances that were featured in Gaspar's 2023 installations and solo exhibitions at El Museo Del Barrio and the Institute of Arts and Sciences at UC Santa Cruz, respectively. Discussing how each iteration o…
Investigating Wiradjuri marara (carved trees or dendroglyphs) and dhabuganha (burials) in the Central Tablelands, southeastern Australia
Marara (carved trees, dendroglyphs or tapholgyphs) are a distinct part of Wiradjuri Country in southeastern Australia. Each marara displays a unique muyalaang (tree carving) that a Wiradjuri person carved into the outer surface of a tree after removing bark. Marara mark the dhabuganha (burials) of Wiradjuri men of high standing, representing part of traditional cultural practices that extend into the deep past. Yet, the meaning of these sacred lo…

Matter and Sense in Gilles Deleuze’s Logic of Sense: Against the ‘Ism’ in Speculative Realism
I argue against the use of general ‘ism’ terms such as ‘speculative realism’ and ‘correlationism’ by Harman. This use is contrasted with more nuanced readings of philosophers, referring to Bryant and DeLanda’s more subtle versions of materialism that do not fit the general label. Instead of general categories I defend Deleuze’s use of the concept of problem as studied by Bell. This argument is then developed through a close reading of Logic of Se…

Mental health and wellbeing implications of the Covid-19 quarantine for disabled and disadvantaged children and young people: Evidence from a cross-cultural study in Zambia and Sierra Leone
The study shows that participants who self-reported low levels of COVID-19 health literacy also scored low on the mental wellbeing self-assessment. Yet, despite undoubted limited resources, these CYP are doing well in identifying their needs and maintaining hope in the face of the problems associated with COVID-19 in countries where stigma persists around mental ill-health

Susceptibility to prosocial and antisocial influence in adolescence
INTRODUCTION: Adolescents are particularly susceptible to social influence and previous studies have shown that this susceptibility decreases with age. The current study used a cross-sectional experimental paradigm to investigate the effect of age and puberty on susceptibility to both prosocial and antisocial influence. METHODS: Participants (N = 520) aged 11-18 from London and Cambridge (United Kingdom) rated how likely they would be to engage i…
Protecting women with multiple and complex needs from gendered violence: Impediments to obtaining and maintaining safe and secure accommodation in a European context
The aim of this article is to identify the key impediments to accessing and sustaining safe and secure accommodation by women with multiple and complex needs within a European context. Women with multiple and complex needs are particularly vulnerable to various forms of violence against them and homelessness is often one of their particular needs. The European context is important because ending violence against women is a key priority of the Eur…
Growing up Healthy in Families Across the Globe: Cross-Cultural Harmonisation of Childhood Risk-Factors Using Longitudinal Studies from Ireland, Scotland and New Zealand
The Growing Up Healthy in Families Across the Globe project is an international collaboration examining the potential for harmonised analysis using five longitudinal studies (from New Zealand, Ireland and Scotland). All five studies follow the lives of children, are interested in the dynamics of family change and work to inform policy to potentially improve population well-being across the life-course. Comparative analysis from harmonised longitu…
Managing geese with recreational hunters
As many goose populations across the northern Hemisphere continue to rise, the role of hunters to manage these populations is increasingly being considered. We studied recreational goose hunters in Denmark to assess their behavioural and motivational characteristics, willingness to alter their hunting effort, as well as their ability to act as stewards of a rapidly increasing goose population. We identified several behavioural characteristics tha…

Tongue-tied modernism in Jean Rhys's Paris
Jean Rhys's four early novels, written in Paris and London in the inter-war years, take a self-consciously peripheral position in relation to the high modernist experimentation which surrounded their composition. Rhys deploys the interiority, stream-of-consciousness and linguistic defamiliarisation of her modernist peers, but also challenges their perceived primacy of form, as well as the suitability of modernist aesthetics for representing socia…
The Egalitarian Sublime: A Process Philosophy
The book answers the question: Can the sublime be egalitarian? It gives critical studies of the main historical theories of the sublime, from Longinus, Burke, Kant, Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, as well as recent secondary literature. There are also reactions to contemporary positions, from Žižek, Lyotard, Kristeva and Adorno. It is argued that the sublime has always had consequences counter to equality. In response to this, the book defends an ana…

Where to go goose hunting? Using pattern-oriented modeling to better understand human decision processes
To predict hunting pressure at a regional level for the adaptive harvest management of a European goose population, we created a predictive model within an existing agent-based model framework. In this paper, we outline the inputs, outputs, and learning from developing this model, using pattern-oriented modeling (POM), to predict the regional distribution of goose hunting locations. Our results showed that social aspects (e.g., crowding, how far …
Stand out of our Light: Freedom and Resistance in the Attention Economy
Former Google advertising strategist, now Oxford-trained philosopher James Williams launches a plea to society and to the tech industry to help ensure that the technology we all carry with us every day does not distract us from pursuing our true goals in life. As information becomes ever more plentiful, the resource that is becoming more scarce is our attention. In this 'attention economy', we need to recognise the fundamental impacts of our new …

Autobiographical memory specificity and emotional disorder
The authors review research showing that when recalling autobiographical events, many emotionally disturbed patients summarize categories of events rather than retrieving a single episode. The mechanisms underlying such overgeneral memory are examined, with a focus on M. A. Conway and C. W. Pleydell-Pearce's (2000) hierarchical search model of personal event retrieval. An elaboration of this model is proposed to account for overgeneral memory, fo…
Implementation of the first adaptive management plan for a European migratory waterbird population: The case of the Svalbard pink-footed goose Anser brachyrhynchus
An International Species Management Plan for the Svalbard population of the pink-footed goose was adopted under the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds in 2012, the first case of adaptive management of a migratory waterbird population in Europe. An international working group (including statutory agencies, NGO representatives and experts) agreed on objectives and actions to maintain the population in favourable …

Poor Men with Money: On the Politics of Not Studying the Poorest of the Poor in Urban South Africa
Poverty and violence crisscross ethnographies of the African city. This is especially pronounced in anthropological research from South Africa, where considerable efforts are made to describe and document poverty and violence across segregated cityscapes. Correlations between poverty and vulnerability are often asserted in the literature: the "poorest of the poor" are presented repeatedly as the persons most susceptible to violence and harm. In t…
The Need for Metaphysics: On the Categories of Explanation in Process and Reality
This article explains the importance of the categories of explanation in Process and Reality and sets it in context, in particular in relation to Whitehead's account of misplaced concreteness and his description of the role of metaphysics in terms of common sense. The article then responds to a series of broad criticisms of Whitehead's position, notably in the claim that it is self-contradictory, inconsistent about common sense and mistaken about…

The authors conclude that the demand for teacher educators is high and the pool of qualified candidates in less than adequate in terms of number of appl…
Science and Dialectics in the Philosophies of Deleuze, Bachelard and DeLanda
This article charts differences between Gilles Deleuze's and Gaston Bachelard's philosophies of science in order to reflect on different readings of the role of science in Deleuze's philosophy, in particular in relation to Manuel DeLanda's interpretation of Deleuze's work. The questions considered are: Why do Gilles Deleuze and Gaston Bachelard develop radically different philosophical dialectics in relation to science? What is the significance o…

Dysrhythmia, dysphoria, and depression: The interaction of learned helplessness and circadian dysrhythmia in the pathogenesis of depression
Increasing evidence suggests that endogenomorphic depressions involve a disruption of circadian rhythms. We review this evidence in relation to comparable findings in animal helplessness studies. We examine the neurophysiological, neuropsychological, and nosological implications of such findings for both helplessness and depression. A disruption of circadian rhythms provides a framework, which suggests three sets of possible interactions between …

Half-Brained Ideas about Education: Thinking and Learning with Both the Left and Right Brain in a Visual Culture
For centuries educators have focused on the printed and spoken word as the medium for transferring knowledge. This emphasis on speech and text has meant that the areas of the brain’s left hemisphere linked to these types of language processing are well exercised, while spatial reasoning, symbolic processing and pictorial interpretation, which seem to be tied to the right hemisphere, remain largely ignored. With the development of television and t…

An Affirmation of Independence: What is Philosophy? by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari

A Narrative of Events, since the First of August, 1834, by James Williams, an Apprenticed Labourer in Jamaica
This book brings back into print, for the first time since the 1830s, a text that was central to the transatlantic campaign to fully abolish slavery in Britain’s colonies. James Williams, an eighteen-year-old Jamaican “apprentice” (former slave), came to Britain in 1837 at the instigation of the abolitionist Joseph Sturge. The Narrative he produced there, one of very few autobiographical texts by Caribbean slaves or former slaves, became one of t…

Autobiographical memory specificity and affect regulation: An experimental approach
This study investigated J. M. G. Williams's (1996) affect-regulation hypothesis that level of specificity of autobiographical memory (AM) is used to minimize negative affect. It was found that a negative event leads to more reports of subjective stress in high- as compared with low-specific participants. Also, afterward, high-specific participants rated their unprompted memories for the event as more unpleasant. The results indicate that, relativ…
