  • For a Younger Crowd: Place, Belonging, and Exclusion among Older Adults Facing Neighborhood Change

    Open Access•Stacy Torres•ARTICLE•Qualitative Sociology•2020•Cited by: 19•References: 40

Cities are gentrifying, yet we know little about the experience of older adults aging in gentrifying areas. Most research has focused on a shortage of affordable housing and threat of eviction for low-income residents but has paid less attention to age. This trend neglects a fuller understanding of place's heightened significance for older people and how commercial gentrification threatens their possibilities to connect in non-institutional, inte…

  • On Elastic Ties: Distance and Intimacy in Social Relationships

    Open Access•Stacy Torres•ARTICLE•Sociological Science•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 24

Drawing on five years of ethnographic fieldwork among older adults in a New York City neighborhood, I present empirical data that complement survey approaches to social isolation and push our understanding of social ties beyond weak and strong by analyzing relationships that defy binary classification. Usual survey items would describe these participants as isolated and without social support. When questioned, they minimize neighborhood relations…

  • Aging Alone, Gossiping Together: Older Adults’ Talk as Social Glue

    Open Access•Stacy Torres, Jan Warren-Findlow•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 13

Higher rates of divorce and lifelong singlehood, coupled with increased longevity, will compel greater numbers of older adults to construct alternative support networks. My findings suggest that more will draw these connections from unconventional venues such as neighborhood public places

  • Changing Family Patterns

Open Access•Kathleen Gerson, Stacy Torres•OTHER•Emerging Trends in the Social and…•2015

All societies have families, but their form varies greatly across time and space. The history of the family is thus one of changing family forms, which result from the interplay of shifting social and economic conditions, diverse and contested ideals, and the attempts of ordinary people to build their lives amid the constraints of their particular time and place. Because the family is a site of our most intimate experiences, the study of families…

  • Aging Women, Living Poorer

    Open Access•Stacy Torres•ARTICLE•Contexts•2014

Sociologist Stacy Torres examines why higher poverty rates persist among older women compared with older men and finds that women continue to face significant economic disadvantages in old age, partly due to a lifetime of unpaid, work-interrupting care giving responsibilities.
