Mental health of college sex workers
This study explored the impact of developmental and recent traumas on PTSD, anxiety, and depression among a sample of university students ( N = 410), including students who engaged in sex work during college. Using linear and hierarchical regressions, the study examined whether gender-based violence and potentially exploitative activities in college, specifically sexual assault (SA), sex work, sex trafficking, and intimate partner violence (IPV) …
Supports for preservice teachers’ metacognitive monitoring and explanations of fraction comparisons
The ability to provide clear and comprehensive instructional explanations on mathematical concepts is key to supporting student learning in the classroom. This is especially important when teaching content that students most often struggle with. A large body of literature has established the challenges that elementary students face with developing fraction magnitude concepts. More recent work points to the struggles that both pre- and in-service …
Cultural Socialization and Civic Engagement Among Racially Diverse Students of Color: Examining Ethnic-Racial Identity Components as Mediators and Neighborhood Racial Composition as a Moderator
Understanding the factors that promote civic engagement among emerging adult college students is crucial, especially considering its association with positive youth development. The current study examined ethnic-racial identity (ERI) exploration, resolution, and affirmation as mediators of the relation between cultural socialization and civic engagement. Additionally, the extent to which students were raised in predominantly minoritized neighborh…

Effects of Teacher Preparation Courses: Do Graduates Use What They Learned to Plan Mathematics Lessons
We investigated whether the content pre-service teachers studied in elementary teacher preparation mathematics courses was related to their performance on a mathematics lesson planning task 2 and 3 years after graduation. The relevant mathematics knowledge was studied when the teachers were freshmen, 5 to 6 years earlier. Results showed that when there were differences in how completely graduates attended to the key mathematics concepts when plan…
The Equality Act 2010: Five years on
â The Equality Act 2010: five years onâ conference was organized as a collaboration between the Forum for Research into Equality and Diversity (University of Chester) and the School of Law and Social Justice (University of Liverpool). The Equality Act 2010 has arguably been one of the most important and challenging pieces of legislation introduced in the last decade in the United Kingdom. As such, it was felt that the 5-year anniversary of its im…
Adopting (in)equality in the UK: The Equality Act 2010 and its impact on charities
This article considers the relationship between the Equality Act 2010 and the Charities Act 2011 (in Scotland, the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005) in the context of adoption by same-sex couples and the complex exceptions to the Equality Act that charities may be able to rely upon in order to continue to discriminate. It concludes that the law is confusing to the point of opacity, to the detriment of those seeking to exercise…

The extent to which English law remedies injury to autonomy (ITA) as a stand-alone actionable damage in negligence is disputed. In this article I argue that the remedy available is not only partial and inconsistent (Keren-Paz in Med Law Rev, 2018) but also gendered and discriminatory against women. I first situate the argument within the broader feminist critique of tort law as failing to appropriately remedy gendered harms, and of law more broad…
Extending Ideas on Improving Teaching: Response to Lampert; Lewis, Perry, Friedkin, and Roth; and Zeichner
Thanks to the editors of the journal for inviting responses to our earlier article, and thanks to Lampert; Lewis, Perry, Friedkin, and Roth; and Zeichner for accepting the invitation and clarifying, extending, and questioning the ideas we proposed. We begin by gratefully acknowledging the responders for reinforcing a number of primary points we tried to make and for amplifying them through useful extensions. Teaching, Rather Than Teachers, As a Path Toward Improving Classroom Instruction
For several historical and cultural reasons, the United States has long pursued a strategy of improving teaching by improving teachers. The rarely questioned logic underlying this choice says that by improving the right characteristics of teachers, they will teach more effectively. The authors expose the assumptions on which this logic is built, propose an alternative approach to improving teaching that engages teachers (and researchers) directly…
Creating Shared Instructional Products: An Alternative Approach to Improving Teaching
To solve two enduring problems in education—unacceptably large variation in learning opportunities for students across classrooms and little continuing improvement in the quality of instruction—the authors propose a system that centers on the creation of shared instructional products that guide classroom teaching. By examining systems outside and inside education that build useful knowledge products for improving the performance of their members,…
Long-term patterns of depression and associations with health and function in a panel study of rheumatoid arthritis
Long-term patterns of depression, and associations with health and function were examined among 1115 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, using 18 years of panel data, summarized in 9653 interviews. Depression was defined by scores on the Geriatric Depression Scale (6 or above). Participants were classified, using cluster analysis, into three distinct patterns of depression over repeated assessments: nondepressed (65.8%), intermittent (25.2%), …
Music in Worship: The Dark Side
For much of Christian history, music has been viewed with suspicion. It is now generally considered a force for good. Using three case studies, this article shows how church music can be used for malign or manipulative purposes. Areas considered include rhythm, inclusivity, breadth, ownership, and context. This article aims to show that, given that music is now used as an instrument of torture, it is time to have a debate about the use and abuse …

Rights and responsibilities: Contested parenthood
This article explores the controversies generated by Evans v Amicus Healthcare Ltd and Others ([2003] EWHC 2161 (Fam), [2005] Fam 1; [2004] EWCA Civ 727, [2004] 2 FLR 766; Evans v UK (Application 6339/05) [2007] ECHR 264) in which a woman sought to use stored embryos contrary to the wishes of her ex‐partner. The case generated widespread interest and illustrates the complexities of modern parenting in the age of assisted procreation. The article …
Preparing Teachers to Learn from Teaching
The authors propose a framework for teacher preparation programs that aims to help prospective teachers learn how to teach from studying teaching. The framework is motivated by their interest in defining a set of competencies that provide a deliberate, systematic path to becoming an effective teacher over time. The framework is composed of four skills, rooted in the daily activity of teaching, that when deployed deliberately and systematically, c…

Constitutionalising Equality in the European Union: Tolerance and Hierarchies
Equality was amongst the founding principles of the European Economic Community, based on the need for freedom of movement and fair competition rather than on adherence to ideals of social justice. The recent legislative developments which have introduced laws prohibiting discrimination based on race, sexual orientation, disability and religious belief represent not only the inclusion of many more groups within the legislative matrix, but also a …
Marriage Rites and Wrongs: Challenges to Orthodoxy
Developments nationally and internationally have focused attention on the question of whether the traditional concept of marriage can survive the challenge from those who seek to extend the right to marry to same‐sex couples, using laws relating to human rights and non‐discrimination. This article examines the basis on which the law now acknowledges the right of transsexuals to marry in their ‘acquired’ gender and asks whether the same reasoning …

Development of logical reasoning: Children's ability to verbally explain the nature of the distinction between logical and nonlogical forms of argument
Previous research by D. Moshman and B. Franks (1986) supported the hypothesis that children do not explicitly understand the nature of the distinction between logical and nonlogical forms of argument. This research examined the performance of 8-11-year-olds (N = 220) on Moshman and Franks's experimental tasks when the children were cued to apply particular comprehension strategies. Findings from 2 experiments indicated that a significant number o…

The Use of Verbatim and Schematic Strategies in the Recall of Written Stories by Deaf and Hearing Children
S ummary . It is, in general, difficult to study cognitive structures in deaf children: in particular, the enquiry into the nature of their story‐knowledge structures (or story schemata) is fraught with thorny methodological problems. While some of the available evidence would suggest that typical deaf children do not read “story schematically”, theirs may be a problem of lack of access to (rather than absence of) such cognitive structures. On th…
