Predictors of antenatal care utilization among the Rohingya population in the refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh
ANC coverage in the Rohingya camps appears high, yet some groups remain at risk for delayed care. Feeling healthy, high parity, and restricted mobility contributed to late initiation. Conventional predictors like household resources showed limited relevance in this context. Further work is needed to better understand the quality of services and effective communication strategies to address remaining underutilization of ANC
Institutional Failures as Structural Determinants of Suicide: The Opioid Epidemic and the Great Recession in the United States
We investigate recent trends in U.S. suicide mortality using a 'structural determinants of health' framework. We access restricted-use multiple cause of death files to track suicide rates among U.S. Black, White, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Latino/a men and women between 1990 and 2017. We examine suicide deaths separately by poisonings and nonpoisonings to illustrate that (1) women's suicide rates from poisonings track strongly with increa…

Stakeholders Engagement in Noise Action Planning Mediated by Ogito: An Open Geo-Spatial Interactive Tool
Noise action planning (NAP) requires collaboration among stakeholders, given the harmful health effects of noise and the subjectivity of how individuals perceive noise. Maptables can be used to mediate in such a collaborative spatial planning process. However, open software applications specifically designed for those devices are still limited or mismatched with user needs. This study presents the co-design and development process of an Open Geo-…
Time to Mainstream the Environment into Migration Theory
As with all social processes, human migration is a dynamic process that requires regular theoretical reflection. This article offers such reflection as related to the role of the natural environment in contemporary migration research and theory. A growing body of evidence suggests that environmental contexts, as shifting social and ecological realities, are consequential to migration theory. In this article, we review some of this evidence, provi…
Differences in Determinants: Racialized Obstetric Care and Increases in U.S. State Labor Induction Rates
Induction of labor (IOL) rates in the United States have nearly tripled since 1990. We examine official U.S. birth records to document increases in states’ IOL rates among pregnancies to Black, Latina, and White women. We test if the increases are associated with changes in demographic characteristics and risk factors among states’ racial-ethnic childbearing populations. Among pregnancies to White women, increases in state IOL rates are strongly …

Shimon AdafAviva-No by Trans. Yael Segalovitz
Where are all those epics you hoped to pen, or the novels. There are, to be sure, some notes strewn here and there, whole mounds of the scraps of primordial works that, given a bit of time, maybe when I retire, could come into shape. Why not? The hard part is realizing suddenly that being a writer takes more than just writing or even writing well. Contacts: those damned contacts. The ones you pick up over decades of tramping on the scene; that sc…

Hitting the Jackpot or Hitting the Skids: Entertainment, Poverty, and the Demand for State Lotteries
State-sponsored lotteries are a lucrative source of revenue. Despite their low payout rates, lotteries are extremely popular, particularly among low-income citizens. State officials laud the benefits of lottery proceeds and promote the fun and excitement of participation. This entertainment value is one explanation for lottery demand by the poor: individuals with lower incomes substitute lottery play for other entertainment. Alternatively, low-in…

Facial gender confirmation surgery—review of the literature and recommendations for Version 8 of the WPATH Standards of Care
Facial gender confirmation surgery (FGCS), also popularly known and referred to in the scientific literature as facial feminization surgery (FFS), was previously treated as a collection of aesthetic procedures complementing other aspects of gender-confirming surgery. Recent literature on quality-of-life outcomes following FGCS has supported the substantial impact these procedures have on overall well-being and reduction of psychosocial sequelae i…

Exile is forced upon him in the same way that it is going to be forced upon his sister, Kenza, who will agree to join him in the hopes of improving her life. For a Candle's Flame
WORLDLITERATURETODAY.ORG 55 For a Candle’s Flame by Andrés Sánchez Robayna A tribute to Luis Fernández The shadowed room is not a firmament in which objects glow like the sky of August glows outside, illuminated. It is another firmament. The naked objects throb, alive, the paper on the nightstand, the glass, the pencil, the beloved lead, the humble wood, the faithful, precise stroke, still sharp on the page. Outside, it rains. In the distance, th…

52 wlt may / august 2015 To the students in my magazine publishing class, I often cite Michael Robert Evans’s assertion that “editing is primarily about people ,” not words. By extension, universities are less about buildings and the spaces—geographical or intellectual—they occupy than about the people who inhabit and enliven them. And for a campus-based literary magazine like World Literature Today, one of the great privileges of working with au…

Mortality from Suicide, Chronic Liver Disease, and Drug Poisonings among Middle-Aged U.S. White Men and Women, 1980–2013
Recent increases in all-cause mortality rates among the middle-aged U.S. white population have been explained in terms of elevated levels of midlife distress. This brief report provides evidence against this explanation for recent mortality trends among U.S. white men and women. Official mortality rates for U.S. white men and women aged 45-54 from suicide, chronic liver disease, drug poisonings, and other "extrinsic" causes of death (i.e., causes…
