Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me
In this inspired translation of Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me, Ghassan Zaqtan's tenth and most recent poetry collection, along with selected earlier poems, Fady Joudah brings to English-language readers the best work by one of the most important and original Palestinian poets of our time. With these poems Zaqtan enters new terrain, illuminating the vision of what Arabic poetry in general and Palestinian poetry in particular are capable of. Depa…

Communities Of Dissent: A History of Alternative Religions in America
Alternative religious groups have had a profound influence on American history-they have challenged the old and opened up new ways of thinking about healing, modes of meaning, religious texts and liturgies, the social and political order, and the relationships between religion and race, class, gender, and region. Virtually always, the dramatic, dynamic history of alternative religions runs parallel to that of dissent in America. Communities of Di…
American Religious History-Decentered with Many Centers
This panel poses the question, "Is there acenterto American religious history?" We historians live in a world and work in a period when the politically correct answer to the question is, "Of course not!" In this day of decentered religious historiography the celebration of radical diversity seems to prohibit any other response. In our publications and teaching we set out to expose readers and students to the rich religious pluralism in America. W…

America's Bibles: Canon, Commentary, and Community
In America the category ‘bible’ enjoys a privileged cultural position. That fact was brought home to me anecdotally several years ago when I received a telephone call forwarded through a departmental secretary. The woman on the other end of the line expressed frustration because she did not know what to do with a worn-out Bible. She asked if there was a proper way to handle the situation: should she bury it, or burn it? She was genuinely perplexe…

George Whitefield on Slavery: Some New Evidence
George Whitefield's racial views pose an enigma for the historian, for he has been closely identified with both the rise of humanitarian ideals and the defense of slavery. In the middle of the eighteenth century as he traveled up and down the American seaboard electrifying the English colonists with his preaching, Whitefield showed a special concern for the plight of the slaves in America. Despite this concern, a nagging fear of insurgency by the…

A Notebook on the Apocalypse by Jonathan Edwards
N I723 at age of nineteen, Jonathan Edwards drew together his reflections on book of Revelation and penned following private conjecture concerning millennium: And what further confirms that sabbath of world will begin near about beginning of seventh thousand years of world, is because we are sure, it cannot be far from it. For we are coming near it already; so that beginning of this time, cannot be very far on this side.' Nearly twenty years late…

A Note on Anne Dutton, Eighteenth-Century Evangelical
Anonymity, forced or voluntary, has frequently cloaked the contributions of women to the life and thought of religious movements. Such was the case with Anne Dutton (1692–1765), an English evangelical, a “gentlewoman” who appears fleetingly in the records of the eighteenth century and only momentarily in later annals of pious women. In spite of some efforts to seek her out early in this century, Dutton has remained a relatively unknown figure in …

The Quest for the Spiritual Sense: The Biblical Hermeneutics of Jonathan Edwards
It is an irony and something of an enigma that the Bible, one of the shaping forces in the theological development of Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), has largely been ignored in the assessments of this colonial divine. Edwards himself acknowledged its influence, especially during his youthful years. “I had then,” he wrote, “and at other times, the greatest delight in the holy Scriptures, of any book whatsoever.” From his meditation on its pages he …

Like Apples of Gold in Pictures of Silver”: The Portrait of Wisdom in Jonathan Edwards's Commentary on the Book of Proverbs
In 1710 the English biblical commentator Matthew Henry declared that no book was more “serviceable” for the “right ordering” of human behavior than the biblical book of Proverbs. According to him, that scriptural collection of precepts and maxims comprised “a complete body of divine ethics, politics, and economics” which exposed vice and recommended virtue. The book of Proverbs provided “rules” governing “every relation and condition.” Henry note…
