  • The Orientation of ‘Chullpas’ (Grave Towers) in the Lauca River Valley of the Bolivian Central High Plateau

    Alejandro Gangui, J Ricra•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2026

We here present the results of an analysis of the precise spatial orientation of numerous groups of chullpa funerary towers located in the Lauca River valley of the Bolivian central high plains. We measured the entrances of 80 towers, constructed mainly from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries AD. Our data shows that their orientations match neither the location of prominent lagoons in the area nor the position of snow- capped volcanoes associated…

Our sample consists of 48 churches, most built during the period between the Castilian conquest led by the Norman Jean de Béthencourt in the early fifteenth century and the end of the nineteenth century. While most of the religious constructions in the sample have their main axes oriented w…

    Open Access•Alejandro Gangui, Eduardo L Ortiz•ARTICLE•Asclepio•2022

  • The Orientation of Jesuit Churches in the Chiquitos Missions of Eastern Bolivia

    Alejandro Gangui•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2021

The Jesuit missions in South America were an important factor in the evangelisation of the continent during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. However, although the history and cultural aspects of the distinctive settlements that the missionaries created for indigenous peoples have been examined extensively, studies that address issues relating to archaeoastronomy have only recently begun to appear, primarily in relation to the orientation…

Inicialmente Loedel Palumb…

  • Urban Planning in the First Unfortified Spanish Colonial Town

Alejandro Gangui, Juan Antonio Belmonte•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2018•Cited by: 1

The city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna in the Canary Island of Tenerife (Spain) is of exceptional value as the first unfortified colonial city to follow regular plan - a grid, outlined by straight streets that form squares - in the overseas European expansion. It constitutes a historical example of the so-called "Town of Peace", the archetype of a city-republic in a new land that employed its own natural boundaries to delimit and defend itself. F…
