The Social Survey, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and the Beginnings of the US Public Health Service’s Sickness Surveys
The earliest sickness survey of the US Public Health Service, which started in 1915, was the Service’s first socioeconomic study of an industrial community. It was also the first to define illness as a person’s inability to work. The survey incorporated the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company’s definition of illness, which, instead of sickness rates, focused on duration of illness as a proxy of time lost from work. This kind of survey took place …
Average annual and seasonal Land Surface Temperature, Spanish Peninsular
The first long-term Land Surface Temperature (LST) maps for the Peninsular Spain at annual and seasonal time scales for 1981–2015 is presented in this work. A robust protocol for correcting and calibrating NOAA-AVHRR images and computing LST datasets at the spatial resolution of 1.1 km has been used. Simultaneously, maximum air temperature (Tmax) maps at the same spatial resolution have been produced using data from meteorological stations. The c…

Movimiento asociativo en Santiago de Cuba
In recent decades, studies of sociability have been involved in significant progress. Styles of Knowledge Production in Colombia, 1850-1920
ArgumentUsing the notion of styles of knowledge we refer to the ways diverse scientific communities claim to produce true knowledge, their understandings regarding the attitudes and values that scientists should have in order to grasp natural and social reality, and the practices and technologies developed within such styles. This paper analyzes scientific and medical enterprises that explored the relationship between environment, population, and…
Debating Diseases in Nineteenth-Century Colombia

Mortality rates or sociomedical indicators? The work of the League of Nations on standardizing the effects of the Great Depression on health
This article explores the first international effort by the League of Nations Health Organization (LNHO) to standardize the study of the effects of the economic crisis of the 1930s on health. Instead of analysing this effort with the benefit of hindsight, this article takes into account the actors' perspectives and, therefore, it relies on the documents produced by the LNHO and public health experts of the 1930s, as well as on the historical scho…
