  • How texts teach what readers learn in a digital age

    Open Access•Lucy Taylor•ARTICLE•English in Education•2022

This paper focuses on How Texts Teach What Readers Learn (Meek, 1988) and considers how texts teach readers in a digital age. I use Meek’s book as a frame for exploring the ways children learn about narration, structure, voice, discourse and language, and becoming an “insider” in the text. To demonstrate this, I use Meek’s own stipulation “If we want to see what lessons have been learned from the texts children read, we have to look for them in w…

Open Access•Catherine Davies, Kristen Syrett et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Adjectives are a powerful tool for enriching vocabulary and developing conceptual understanding. In early elementary and primary classrooms, across core and foundation subjects, children are expected to describe, measure, classify, and compare objects and events-all processes that require a mastery of adjective meanings and use. While teachers are trained in vocabulary learning, they may be less familiar with: (i) the psychological processes by w…

Lucy Taylor, Geraldine Lublin•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2021

This introduction to the Special Issue of Settler Colonial Studies on Latin America locates the articles within the field of settler colonial theory and places it within the context of Latin American Studies. It reflects on the potential of settler colonial theory to provide fresh perspectives on the Latin American reality, and opens discussion about how Latin American experiences and critical analysis might complicate and enrich theorising about…

  • Enablers and challenges when engaging local communities for urban biodiversity conservation in Australian cities

    Open Access•Lucy Taylor, Cecily Maller et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Across all landscape types, environmental managers work with communities to conserve biodiversity. The effectiveness of conservation practice, however, relies on acknowledging differences in preferences and values of nature. Implementing urban conservation is challenging because cities have diverse social, cultural and ecological attributes, meaning there are no simple solutions for the management or co-management of biodiversity. There is little…

  • Emergent digital authoring: Playful tinkering with mode, media, and technology

Becky Lucy Parry, Lucy Taylor•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 22

This article utilizes the term "digital authoring" in order to explore the ways in which children create multi-modal, digital media texts. Drawing on the notion of "emergent literacy" we share vignettes from different pedagogical and research contexts where children use media to tell stories in different forms with different technologies. These accounts demonstrate the value to children of opportunities to make volitional choices about the mode, …

  • Four foundations of settler colonial theory: Four insights from Argentina

    Lucy Taylor•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2020

How might analysis of Argentina, its history and social relations, complicate and enrich our understanding of settler colonialism? This is the key question that drives this article which explores four of the conceptual foundations that underpin settler colonial theory: the labour/land distinction; terra nullius; the black/slavery category; and the settler/native binary. From these, four key insights emerge around the following themes: capitalism;…

  • Is democracy a good idea?

    Lucy Taylor•CHAPTER•Global Politics•2019

This chapter explores how electoral democracy works through populism, arguing for the need to take seriously the social context of democratic politics. It illustrates the importance of social movements for democracy, especially when the dominant political regime turns towards authoritarianism. Once in power Evita Peron enforced higher wages for workers, built housing, hospitals, schools and even created holiday resorts, just for the working class…

  • The Welsh Way of Colonisation in Patagonia: The International Politics of Moral Superiority

    Lucy Taylor•ARTICLE•The Journal of Imperial &…•2019•References: 10

This article explores the ‘myth of friendship’ between the Welsh and indigenous communities of Patagonia in the mid to late nineteenth century. Drawing on extensive archival research, it unpacks the purpose of this myth which is to demonstrate the moral superiority of the Welsh nation. The proof of Welsh righteousness derives not only from their peaceful, loving approach to colonisation in Patagonia but from stories which recount that the ‘Indian…

  • Global perspectives on Welsh Patagonia: The complexities of being both colonizer and colonized

    Open Access•Lucy Taylor•ARTICLE•Journal of Global History•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 16

The nationalist Welsh colony in Patagonia, Y Wladfa, offers a peripheral vantage point from which to reconsider core assumptions about settler colonialism and the British World. Taking a fresh approach to settler colonial studies, this article both pays close attention to settler motives before embarkation and also analyses the case from a global perspective. It foregrounds the role of unequal power relations in Britain, the British World, and th…

  • Defining greenspace: Multiple uses across multiple disciplines

    Open Access•Lucy Taylor, Dieter F Hochuli•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2017

Greenspace research has been driven by an emerging interest in the impact that biodiversity and ecosystem function has on life in urban areas. Studies from multiple disciplines across the life, physical and social sciences investigate the interactions with or within greenspace, creating a wide range of potentially related, but disparate findings. In order to understand whether these unconnected findings might be integrated, it is important to be …

    Open Access•Lucy Taylor•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American Studies•2017•References: 8

This article discusses the colonial encounter of the Welsh and Tehuelche/Mapuche in the Welsh colony (Y Wladfa Gymreig), founded 1865. The Welsh sought to create a Welsh-speaking utopia in the 'empty' lands of Patagonia, paradoxically using this colonisation as a way to resist disparagement of the Welsh language and culture by an English-dominated state. The article deploys a 'coloniality of power' perspective and explores archive materials that …

Drawing inspiration from ‘coloniality of power’ scholarship, it explores the way in which citizenship is conventionally configured and goes on to demonstrate the role of citizenship in the task of epistemological colonization in the ca…
