  • “All this universe is perfused with signs”

    Jack Hope, Jonathan Hope•ARTICLE•Green Letters•2020

Where are other minds? What networks of communication keep them together and enable us to connect? I will address these questions in the following pages by relying on philosophical essays and works of SF (science fiction/speculative fiction). More precisely, I propose to associate the imaginary worlds in Frank Herbert’s renowned novel Dune and those in Les Naufragés du Temps, a series of bandes dessinées (comics) authored by Paul Gillon and Jean-…

  • Qui vient manger ? Sémiotique alimentaire humaine et autre-qu'humaine

    Open Access•Jonathan Hope•ARTICLE•Cuizine The Journal of Canadian…•2019

  • Literature as a defining trait of the human umwelt

Open Access•Pierre-Louis Patoine, Jack Hope et al.•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2016•References: 2

Writers and readers of literature are, among other things, biological en tities that evolve under particular political (geographical/historical) conditions. A comparative study of certain texts by Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) can help us establish a fruitful interpretation of this threefold link between literary art, biology and politics. However, careful analysis reveals that Heidegger remains too rooted in an old-world, nationalistic and anthro…

  • Heidegger and the signs of history

    Open Access•Jack Hope, Jonathan Hope•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2015•References: 2

Heidegger’s conception of the sign formulated in Sein und Zeit (1996 [1927]) may shed some light on his disastrous, philosophical and political experience with Nazism. In order to show this, I propose to assess how Heidegger establishes the relationship between signs and history in his magnum opus. Then, relying on the fact – central to Heidegger’s thinking, and to sign studies in general – that ideas are linked to the world, I will proceed to ex…

  • The sign in Heidegger's Sein und Zeit

    Open Access•Jack Hope, Jonathan Hope•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2014

Sign studies are traditionally divided into two major traditions: Peircean and Saussurean. However, other thinkers theorized the sign in radically unique terms. The German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) is one of these parallel thinkers. Rather than considering the sign in exclusively logical or linguistic terms, Heidegger claimed that the sign grounded existence itself. The sign was at the very heart of being. Strangely, Heidegger's co…
