  • The Therapeutic Wanderings of Pericles

    Open Access•Michael Dobson•ARTICLE•Études Épistémè•2024

This article considers the agency of Shakespeare and Wilkins’ play Pericles in shaping its own reception history across time. It considers the play as the most medicine-friendly work in the unusually medicine-friendly Shakespeare canon, before considering a range of supposedly therapeutic performances of the play. These range from its early presence in the repertory of the recusant Yorkshire troupe Cholmeley’s Men, shown to have specialized in pl…

  • O resto é silêncio”

    Open Access•Michael Dobson•ARTICLE•Letras•2022

    Open Access•Michael Dobson•ARTICLE•Cahiers Élisabéthains A Journal…•2022

‘Molière à Shakspeare’ was recited on 2 June 1879 by the leading actor François Got as the prologue to a forty-performance season given by the Comédie-Française at the Gaiety Theatre in London. An understanding of what prompted Jean Aicard's poem and what makes it significant depends on the knowledge of its context. This short introduction to a transcription of the prologue outlines that context and briefly compares the poem with its companion pi…

  • Camps, military

    Open Access•Michael Dobson•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2021

All ancient armies required camps, but the Roman army made them a specialty. It constructed a camp ( castra ) at the end of each day's march to provide protected overnight shelter. It was used as a base from which to march forth and offer battle nearby, form part of siegeworks, provide a temporary halt when campaigning in order to rest and gather supplies, and so on. To a Roman soldier the camp was his second home – the ramparts his city walls an…

The eighteenth century inherited two versions of The Tempest . One was an established classic, immensely popular in the theatre and the subject of countless allusions outside it: The Tempest , or the Enchanted Island , adapted by Dryden and Davenant in 1667 and provided with further operatic embellishments by Shadwell in 1674. The other was the play which appears first in the Shakespeare Folio, The Tempest , which had not been performed since its…
