  • I.3/ Le rôle des jeunes tueurs dans la « Shoah par balles »

Martin Dean, Claire Drevon•ARTICLE•Revue d’Histoire de la Shoah•2021

In a reflection of the fighting that took place on the front lines, nearly every young German male between the ages of 18 and 22 participated in the Second World War. However, this age group was significantly under-represented among the Germans who directly perpetuated the Holocaust, with the notable exception of the Waffen-SS. Waffen-SS soldiers were deployed for several weeks at a time to participate in executions before they were sent on to th…

  • In Memoriam

    Martin Dean•ARTICLE•Holocaust and Genocide Studies•2015

The passing of David Cesarani on October 25, 2015 was a painful loss to the community of Holocaust scholars. David had devoted much of his career to Holocaust studies and was a rare example of a historian who combined voracious reading and prodigious scholarship with an impressive list of enduring practical achievements. His oeuvre of more than fifteen books balanced innovative studies on Jewish history with several important contributions on the…

  • The Warsaw Ghetto

    Martin Dean•ARTICLE•German History•2011

Engelking and Leociak set out to reconstruct the fabric of daily life in the doomed city that was the Warsaw Ghetto, using one decisive tool -an almost obsessive attention to detail. They provide contemporary reviews of the plays performed and descriptions of songs sung in the cafs. There are even portraits of some of the more eccentric characters, such as Rubinsztajn, the ' jester of the ghetto ' . What was it like to live in such an abnormal wo…

  • Geophysical Methods for Wreck-Site Monitoring

    Open Access•Richard Bates, C Richard Bates et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2010•Cited by: 12•References: 2

Rapid advances in geophysical techniques over the past decade have provided the maritime archaeological community with significant opportunities for re-defining the procedures for wreck-site mapping, evaluation and monitoring. The techniques which offer most potential for high-resolution survey are acoustic-based and include sidescan sonar, swath-bathymetry sonar and multibeam sonar. These techniques were tested on an artificial test-site in Plym…

  • Robbery and Restitution

Martin Dean, Constantin Goschler et al.•BOOK•Robbery and restitution•2007

The robbery and restitution of Jewish property are two inextricably linked social processes. It is not possible to understand the lawsuits and international agreements on the restoration of Jewish property of the late 1990s without examining what was robbed and by whom. In this volume distinguished historians first outline the mechanisms and scope of the European-wide program of plunder and then assess the effectiveness and historical implication…

  • La spoliation des « biens juifs » dans le commissariat général des territoires de l’est (1941-1944)

Martin Dean, Valérie Nguyen•ARTICLE•Revue d’Histoire de la Shoah•2007

The Nazi seizure of Jewish property in the occupied East was inextricably linked to the persecution and the murder of the local Jews, which took place within earshot of their homes. Using a combination of German official reports, survivor testimonies, and evidence from war crimes trials, this article documents the successive waves of confiscation, corruption, and looting that accompanied the Holocaust in Reichskommissariat Ostland. A detailed cas…

  • Les conseils juifs en Pologne orientale et en Union soviétique sous l’occupation Allemande

Martin Dean, Chrystelle Armstrong•ARTICLE•Revue d’Histoire de la Shoah•2006

Despite certain weaknesses in terms of sources, Isaiah Trunk’s analysis of the Jewish Councils in Eastern Europe remains the most effective treatment of the subject. However, since it was written, the opening of the Soviet archives in the 1990s has expanded the regional scope of our knowledge to include Jewish Councils in some of the numerous ghettos that existed mostly only for a short period beyond the pre-1939 Polish borders. The aim of this ar…

    Open Access•Martin Dean•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Three historians comment on the articles. John Connelly considers the moral and historiographical meanings of "collaboration" and "collaborationism" and suggests that even those cases that Friedrich documents do not make Poland into a collaborationist country. In fact, the Nazis were disappointed that Poles refused to collaborate. Connelly emphasizes the complicated choices and intentions among the Polish population and calls for bringing togethe…

  • The Development and Implementation of Nazi Denaturalization and Confiscation Policy up to the Eleventh Decree to the Reich Citizenship Law

    Martin Dean•ARTICLE•Holocaust and Genocide Studies•2002•Cited by: 5

Both Nazi racial policy and confiscation of Jewish property motivated the intensification of denaturalization in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Considerable continuity marked the development of denaturalization policy from 1933 to 1941 as existing laws and practices were progressively extended in scope. The initially small group of outspoken critics of the regime who had fled abroad and been targeted by the Gestapo for denaturalization grew stea…

  • Comparison of the maritime Sites and Monuments Record with side‐scan sonar and diver surveys

Open Access•R Quinn, Wes Forsythe et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2002•Cited by: 5

Rathlin Island, off the north coast of Ireland, has a history of settlement and seafaring from the Late Mesolithic period to the present day. The maritime Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) for Rathlin indicates many wrecking incidents. In 1999, a reconnaissance side‐scan sonar survey confirmed the presence of 46 targets of possible archaeological potential around Rathlin Island. Thirteen of these anomalies were positively identified as shipwrecks.…
