Soviet Society and Culture: Essays in Honor of Vera S. Dunham
Literature, Culture, and Society in the Modern Age: In Honor of Joseph Frank
So Much Depends… Russian Critics in Search of "Reality"
Belinsky and Pushkin from the Twentieth Century My concern in this essay is to examine, from the vantage point of the modem critical mind (by which I mean primarily the critical viewpoint of Russian formalism and structuralism) certain nineteenth-century Russian writings-texts, if you like-about literature and culture that have definitely not stood the test of time. The critical writings of Belinsky and Chemyshevsky, for the most part, have becom…
Glasnost' in Historical Perspective
The Symbolist Contamination of Gor'kii's "Realistic" Style
I am concerned in this paper with investigating the complex relationship of Maksim Gor'kii with the literature of his day, including the so-called realists, but particularly with the decadents, the symbolists, and other writers generally thought of as alien to Russian realism, whether critical or socialist. The stereotype of Gor'kii still dominant in some quarters presents him as walled off from "decadent" and "bourgeois" literary styles and from…

Some Reflections on the Russian Idea Suggested by the Reading of Nivat's Vers la fin du Mythe Russe
Nivat's book' is a collection of essays on a vast array of figures and topics Gogol to our days, written and in part published during 'seventies in response to particular publications or other occasions of that period. The fact that, as presented here, these various essays create a unity of effect is evidence of informing power of ideas, especially when rendered in graceful language. The reader of this book comes away delighted by his long conver…
Russian Literature since the Revolution
Long recognized as the best and most comprehensive work on its subject, Edward J. Brown's fine book is now thoroughly revised and updated. It provides a compendious treatment of Russian literature from the revolutionary period to the early 1980s. Every stage in the evolution of Russian literature since 1917, every major author, all the important literary organizations, groups, and movements, are sharply outlined, with a wealth of often unfamiliar…

Roman Osipovich Jakobson 1896-1982 the Unity of His Thought on Verbal Art
Roman Jakobson was one of the great minds of the modern world, and the effects of his genius have been felt in many fields: linguistics, semiotics, art, structural anthropology, and, of course, literature. Consider the scientific milestones that marked his long life: one of the founders of the Russian formalist school, he emigrated to Prague in 1920, where his activity in a free environment guaranteed the survival and evolution of formalist ideas…
The Occurrence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Arsenic in Subarctic Streams Affected by Gold-Mine Drainage
Thirty-five streams in gold-mining regions between Rampart, Alaska, and Dawson City, Yukon Territory, were sampled to determine dissolved arsenic concentrations, and numbers of the acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooidans. The pH of the streams varied from 6.3 to 8.6 and the streams were nearly saturated with dissolved oxygen. T. ferrooxidans was found in eight of nine streams affected by gold-mine drainage and in…

Mayakovsky: A Poet in the Revolution
An absorbing portrait of an extraordinary man, an analysis of the work of a great Russian poet, and the evocation of a crucial period in Russian cultural history--all are combined in Edward J. Brown's literary biography of Vladimir Mayakovsky. It is the only book to reveal the whole Mayakovsky, not just aspects of his tortured personality or artistic work, and will be immediately recognized as definitive.Mayakovsky contributed to the cultural lif…
